Is it true that whichever side of the country you go to for undergraduate studies, that side is where you will most likely stay for graduate school also? Do east coast graduate schools rarely accept people from the west coast, and vice versa?

A have a friend who just graduated from Cornell and is deciding between Stanford and Berkeley for grad school (English). I think she’s going to pick stanford. I don’t think there is necessarily a correlation between where you go undergrad and grad geographically. Just as often as people would like to stay in the same region, people might like a change of scenery. I bet I will, being up east.

I don’t think region would matter for admissions. You will get into any east coast school coming from Stanford, CalTech, Berkeley, Pomona, etc. with a good record.
