Eating disorders and athletes

A friend just counseled us against allowing our D to compete at a certain D1 school. He said they have a reputation for producing eating disorders in their female athletes. Actually, the university does have an impressive eating disorders program with a great website, so it’s possible this assessment is true. However, how can I verify if it is? The MIT reputation for high suicide rates is not accurate, so this may also be an unfounded rumor.

Has anyone heard this kind of thing about any D1 schools? (excluding gymnastics, since that seems highly sport-specific)

There are other sports where weight makes a difference, like running, lightweight rowing or coxing, I’d imagine equestrian sports… I would imagine that to be much more based on the team and coaches than the university, however. I think what you’re saying is that it is a university-wide and not sport-specific issue? I wouldn’t surprised if a team had that reputation, but I would be surprised if the university as a whole did.

Ya definitely a sport specific issue, as well more common in female sports (not saying it doesn’t affect men just not as much).
