Eats in DC?

Looking for a relatively inexpensive place in DC to have dinner with a large group of friends. We have no real preference…just looking for a place that can accommodate us without clearing out our wallets.

We had my D’s graduation dinner (10 family members) at Southern Hospitality. They have an upstairs private room, if you need it. Great food and good service.

Carmine’s - it’s downtown by the FBI building.

Consistently great Italian food, reasonably priced if you don’t over order (it’s family style), and they can easily accommodate big parties.

And it’s fun!

We ate there last week and can’t wait to get back.

how large a group? we love nandos in DC - wish there were more across the country - http://www.nandosperiperi.com/

Founding Farmers! http://www.wearefoundingfarmers.com/washington-dc/ff_menus/menu-lunchdinner/

I really like Founding Farmers on Pennsylvania Avenue. The food is good, ditto the service. There are several salads, sandwiches, and pasta entrees for under $15, and a decent selection of meat/fish entrees in the $20 range. I don’t know how large a crowd you’re expecting - one of my kids had a group of 17 people there once - but even for a small group, reservations are necessary because it’s a popular spot… http://www.wearefoundingfarmers.com/washington-dc/ff_menus/menu-lunchdinner/

Founding Farmers is good for a group for sure. Not sure how large your wallets are but we’ve had several fantastic meals at Le Diplomate and I’ve seen multiple large groups when dining there. Given my recent experiences at FF, it would not be my first choice.

I really need stronger reading glasses. I thought this said “Bats in DC.”

Cactus Cantina by the Cathedral can handle large crowds. We would go there with the girls’ basketball team.

Definitely love Founding Farmers. Also Cactus Cantina. For something different, Hot and Juicy in Woodley Park. Also Lebanese Taverna. They are both right at the Metro Station (Red LIne). There are also some great tapas restaurants-- we like Zatinya and Boqueria.

A good bargain is Medium Rare, right by the Cleveland Park Metro station (Red LIne). It has just one thing on the menu–steak–and is served with fabulous fries and salad --for a fixed price of $19.75. If you call ahead for a large party, they will put a table together for you.

I’ve had fun with a big group in the upstairs dining room at Bistro d’Oc.

Double recommend for Nando’s! I’ve only actually been to one on the outskirts of London, but after hearing it talked about in some of our favorite British TV, my friend and I couldn’t resist. It’s definitely a very casual environment though.

I would also double up the recommendations for Zatinya. I had a great family birthday dinner there, with about 8 people attending. It’s fun tapas, but tapas can get pricey.

More suggestions from my resident DC D:

If you like tapas, La Tasca is very good, good for a group, and much more affordable than Zaytinya. D has eaten there with a group of 20 and it went well.

Hill Country BBQ, a lot of people like the food (she does not personally)

Bluejacket Brewery, a bit out of the way but really good food and good for groups

Front Page (Dupont Circle) - food is fine but unremarkable

Cafe Saint Ex or Meridian Pint also recommended as could be good for a group.

Looks like you have plenty of recommendations to choose from!

Cactus Cantina is quite large, so good for a group. Food is fine. Margaritas are great!
My D used to work at Hill Country BBQ - I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s very overpriced and, if you are from a BBQ state (esp Texas) you will be disappointed.
I like Founding Farmers, but reservations are sometimes hard to get.

Thanks everyone. We will definitely look into these!

I was going to suggest Medium Rare but boysx3 beat me to it.

I like Vidalia @ 19th & M Sts. Nando’s is good.
I was disappointed with Hill Country BBQ, too.

Jaleo
