Maybe I’m the last one to the party on this, but I recently downloaded the “Ebates Button” for Google Chrome - so cool! Thought it would be a good thing to share especially with all the online shopping that may occur by CC’ers in the next couple of months!
Once you download the button, it sits up on the right side of your Google Chrome toolbar. If you have a Pinterest button, it will be next to that. Anytime you go to a page that is an Ebates vendor, a little flag will pop up and notify you that this vendor participates in ebates and will show you the cash back %. Just click on the button and your cash back is enacted - no need to leave the page to go check on ebates to check - BRILLIANT!!
Am I the last one to know about this? Not sure how new it is.
Yesterday there happened to be a local Groupon that I wanted to get. Don’t buy many Groupons anymore but when I went to the Groupon page the button notified me of a 5 or 6% cash back - I would NOT have thought Groupon was on Ebates! One click and I ended up getting more $$ back on an already sweet Groupon!
Just going to bump this one once from the weekend because I know there used to be a lot of Ebates users on here. Perhaps I’m late to the party, but I thought it was a great tool to have going into the holiday online ordering time of year!!!
I love ebates and have saved a lot of money in the 3 years I’ve used it. I use Firefox and had an ebates button some time ago. I can’t remember the details at all but I ended up deleting the button because it was causing other kinds of problems with the computer. Maybe I should give it a try again. It was nice to have it automatically tap into my ebates account. I get really frustrated with myself when I make a big purchase and have forgotten to go through ebates.
I use Ebates and I have the little button at the top. Ebates is terrific – I really don’t understand how they make money; do they?? – although I haven’t received anything huge back from them. A couple of bucks from time to time. Still, I’ll take that.
Wow, I am really out of it. I have no idea what eBates is, or how to get the button or how it works. But, if it gives small rebates on large Amazon purchases, I could really use it.
I didn’t know about the button but I try to remember to check with ebates. Having said that, I also check mrrebates (same concept) and mrrebates is almost always higher. In addition, I loaded ‘honey’ on my browser and, when I’m checking out, if honey is operational on that site, you click a button and it runs through all the codes it can find to try to get the best discount. Has definitely helped me save money many times. ebates/mrrebates generally can be used in conjunction with honey. https://www.joinhoney.com/
I don’t understand why these buttons (or whatever) are not on Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, old habits die hard for me. I just automatically launch my Internet Explorer when I start shopping. Unfortunately, I don’t shop for anything too fun like Macys or Land’s End, just big lighting purchases for construction. That’s about the most shopping fun I have online.
The catch is that it is an easy way to collect information about consumers’ spending habits. A notch above what Facebook does. We pre-segment the market for these guys.
I stopped using ebates a while ago once I started buying everything on Amazon (mostly excluded purchases). When I was shopping around for textbooks though, I did get a few bucks back.
My mom does all of her shopping online and uses ebates and coupons religiously. Definitely worth it for her.
If they want to collect info about me and the payoff is I save a few bucks, be my guest
Yeah, I really don’t care all that much if they keep track of what I’ve bought. Kinda boring, in my opinion, and I use AdBlock, so I don’t see any (well, very very few) online ads.
I added the ebates button last night and it seems to be much improved from the one I tried earlier. It says I’ve received $700 so far and that is definitely worth it to me! My spending is very boring and I also use AdBlock so I haven’t seen any negative ramifications from using it.
I have had no problem with having the button or using Ebates in general - I am not a heavy online buyer - sort of medium. I’ve received going on $200 back in mostly the last three years or so. Happy to have it!
I love the Ebates button. I’ve received $300+ back in the last 2 or so years. I also shop through the Upromise site and cash back can be deposited into a 529 or applied to a Sallie Mae loan. I check both and go with the higher percentage. Recently, Upromise has more often been the better option.
I think it just means that the button is going to “read” the webpage you visit to determine if it is a site you purchase things from so that the button can determine the cash back %.
@my-3-sons You can also just request a check from Upromise.
All of those sites are getting paid referrals for directing you to the retailer sites. They are just sharing a portion with you so you will go through their link. A brilliant money making strategy.
