I paid by paypal. The seller got his buyers and items mixed up. Sent me the wrong item which I returned right away. I asked for a refund since he no longer has the thing I bought.

Now he is asking if I want him to mail me a check or through paypal. I sense that I will lose my paypal buyer protection if he sends me a check…the check may bounce, etc. I want my refund through paypal, right?
This was my first time using paypal. Do I have to do anything to accept money into my paypal account?
Proceeding with caution. Fill me in, thanks.

It should just be a credit to your paypal account and then the next time you buy something on ebay or use paypal, you can use that money in your account. You don’t have to do anything to accept the money, I don’t believe - the seller should have an option through ebay to give you the paypal refund.

Thanks. My next question, the seller can include the original purchase price plus shipping and add in my return shipping charge? I should get reimbursed for the return shipping, right? It wasn’t my mistake.

When this happened to me in the past, the seller refunded the cost of returning the item to them with the refund of the purchase price + what I paid to ship the original item to me. I’d ask, if they don’t offer.

Do a Dispute Resolution through Paypal for the payment. Have the original transaction reversed. The seller should be happy about that because it also refunds their paypal fees. Anything else, and you may be scammed.

You should get a refund for the full amount, and if they are reputable for the return postage for the item incorrectly sent.

Also, if you paid through paypal with a credit card, make sure you dispute the charge with your credit card company.

Stuff happens, and they made a mistake, but if they refund you fully, it should all be OK. I wouldn’t leave negative feedback if they refund you everything.

The problem with the paypal credit is that it will sit there until you use paypal again and also, they deduct a percentage of the transaction, meaning you won’t get the full amount back. If the seller has a good feedback rating, I’d take the check.

The original transaction was paid using paypal. If the transaction is reversed (rather than sending $'s in a new transaction), then all the money and fees are reversed (no cost to received back the funds, and the funds are sent back to the credit card). If the funds originally came from a bank account, I don’t know if they would stay in the account, or be sent back to the bank account.

You could get the money from PayPal to your bank acct with no fee.

Under the tab “My Account”, there is a sub tab “Withdraw.” There are few options, one of them is “Withdraw funds to your bank account,” and the cost is free. My family uses PayPal to send birthday money to each other’s kids, and we use the Withdraw feature to get the money into our acct. I have a dead beat relative who I need to get money from for various family parties and presents. I always asked for PayPal payment, otherwise if his check bounces then I could be out $30-50 bank fee.

Thanks everyone, I’m holding my breath til I get the refund. I asked him to do it through paypal, he wrote back and said he would then need my email address and I gave it to him. I’m a little nervous about that, but gave it.

I will often use AmEx as my funding source (instead of bank acct) when I am not certain about a seller. AmEx gives me extra protection if there is a dispute.

He cannot send you money via paypal without your email address- that is how paypal accounts are identified.

Don’t be surprised if you don’t get shipping or return shipping back - there is no standard unless it is somehow clear in paypal’s dispute resolution system which I doubt.

OK, the refund is in my paypal account…the purchase price, the original shipping, the return shipping, he even rounded it upwards–extra fifty cents.

I have left good feedback for him, five stars all around. It WAS very fast shipping! Just from the wrong auction!
If you request a paypal check there is 1.50 charge but you can transfer it to your bank account for free.
