I am confused on what I should write about for the Common App Short Answer.

My passion is creating iPhone games for the App Store, but I am not in a club for it or anything… I just do it in my own time because I like to do it.

I am also the editor-in-chief of my school newspaper and helped convert the program to a website and an iPhone app. I don’t feel as passionately about newspaper, but I have more credentials in it and work with other people constantly.

Which should I write about, my personal interest or my leadership in newspaper? HELP!

iPhone app is fine. It is different. Tell them about how you got into it, obstacles you had to overcome, things you learned about having a store. How many apps you have written. How did you come up with the ideas. Success you have had selling them.

I think it is better if you write about what you’re passionate about, it can’t help but come through in your response. If you wanted to, you could incorporate a reference at least to the editor-in-chief position into your answer on the iPhone apps.

Don’t try to figure out what the admissions committee would most like to see. And don’t repeat what is elsewhere on your application. Show what you want them to see of you as a person. They know you were editor of the newspaper from your app, right? Unless you have really meaningful experience to share, they probably know all they need to about that.
