I bought some at Target for $2 each and they are the good ones.
For anyone trying to come to Oregon --many many private farms in the Sherwood and Mcminnville area are
having bashes–camping for a night or two for $100 a person with breakfast and music at night with a campfire.
Guessing google Eclipse Oregon Farms sites … or such.
If I find more specific I will post.
The warning we received from Wyoming is ‘gas up before coming.’ They expect there to be shortages as they can only store so much and some of the places with full coverage are in the middle of nowhere. I think there will be a lot of traffic everywhere, and would stock my car as if it were a snowstorm coming - water, food, blankets, gas tank full.
My daughter says a retinal specialist she works with is hoping that the whole thing gets rained out. But really, if the risk of retinal damage is so great wouldn’t we all know people whose vision was damaged by previous eclipses when glasses weren’t available? Wouldn’t there be historical data about entire populations who didn’t know not to look at an eclipse and sustained vision damage en masse?
Oregon is treating this as if you need to prepare for our eventual earthquake.
WATER more than you can imagine/
Bring 2-3 weeks of any important meds with you.
Pet food if you bring one.
Water again.
It will be nice enough weather so no big issues there.
I would bring a few hundred in small dollars ( we have such in each car) as you
cannot predict a cell phone/credit card crash.
I, personally, would have a fire extinguisher in my car. (we do)
I’m not sure we should drive up I-85 to the GA/SC border for this. We’re in the 98.5% band and I-85 is bad on a good day heading out of Atlanta. However, we have some friends with a place on Lake Hartwell, which is well within the band of totality. Hmmm…
My friend remembers one eclipse in the 60-70’s when she was at camp, and they brought them all into the dining hall, closed all the shutters and locked them in. They were afraid the kids would look at the sun even if told not to.
I still remembering flying H, me and our 2 kids to my aunt’s house in Hilo for elipse about 25 years ago. We got rained and clouded out. We would’ve seen more if we had stayed home! The worst thing was D ended in the hospital when she got home!
Weirdly enough, managers of the electric grid in California are preparing for the eclipse by arranging for extra electricity from gas and hydroelectric sources to make up fro the loss of solar power expected during the eclipse. A high enough percentage of CA’s power comes from solar that even though the eclipse is only partial this far south, that for the two hours of the eclipse the state will still suffer the loss of enough electricity to power an estimated 6 million homes.
Amazon recalled a bunch of eclipse glasses and was supposed to alert those affected with e-mail last Saturday.
Just make sure your glasses are from reputable place.
A friend showed a photo of empty food shelves in Jackson Hole! It’s either the pre-eclipse hoarding frenzy or eclipse tourists buying everything in sight.
So if you’re headed to Wyoming (supposedly one of the better places to see the eclipse) bring food. And beer.
ABC World News concluded with a segment on the eclipse in 1979, which I have no recollection of. It occurred on my dad’s birthday my freshman year of college. They were reporting with wonder that it would be the next century, 38 years later, when the next total eclipse occurred in the U.S. Now it’s just seven more years till the next one, and since I can’t go to the path of totality this year, I’m already thinking about heading to my hometown of Cleveland to see the total eclipse in 2024.

I was telling my D about that eclipse in 1979. I can remember so clearly walking out a building on campus as it was occurring. I can remember exactly where I was.
We will have 90% total eclipse where I live and 100% in 2024. I might have a chance to grab glasses in a couple days, but they are out of stock at Walmart, grocery stores, Lowes and libraries and Best Buy in my surrounding area. I’ll try target tomorrow but I might be out of luck.
