I got my eclipse glasses free from from The Grease Monkey. Is that reputable, @gouf78 ?
If they are covered with engine grease, they are good.
double post
We have to leave on monday from Atlanta to head to DC to drop D17 off for college. Traffic is going to be a nighmare!!! probably wont get to our hotel at the midway point until who knows when, with DH thinking that we can just stop along the way around the time of total eclipse. sigh.
Just left one of the small NW towns which is in the path of the totality. Hertz has oversold it’s rental cars. They brought an additional 17K vehicles into the area - and they are still oversold. We had to rent a Yaris for $400 for two days, last time H was there he got upgraded to a Jag - for about $45/day. They are expecting the normally 1.5 hour drive from the airport to town to be a 6-8 slog fest starting this coming weekend.
I have a childhood friend who is driving up to area because we can offer her a free room, hotels are going for $1000/night. I wouldn’t do it if you paid me.
Yikes. It is going to be insane.
If it doesn’t get dark where I am that’s ok. Somebody has to watch 99.9% totality with questionable Amazon glasses and that person might as well be me.
It is the Armageddon. At least for the folks who live in the areas where the hordes of eclipse watchers are planing on to descend. B-)
The neighborhood hardware store has signs at the entrance and by the checkout saying that they do not have eclipse glasses. Which is ok, because we have plenty.
Here are places you can stream online. Surely there will be good weather somewhere!
Whoa, sorry for the long link!
P.S. I’m giving up my plans to go eclipse hunting. I’ll be taking D3 back to school on Friday and I just can’t handle the logistics at this point. Anyone want a hotel room in Fort Collins, CO? Let me know and I’ll coordinate my cancellation with you calling them, if I can.
ETA - Fort Collins is not in the direct path, but looks to be an “easy” 2-3 hour drive up to the direct path in WY. Probably the most reliable place to avoid cloud cover.
Twoinanddone your friend must have been in camp with me…same experience. It was my impetus for flying from D.C. To Nashville for this one. And after only two tries with Amazon, I have genuine eclipse glasses!
And sadly the day I arranged for our windows to be cleaned just 2 weeks before D’s wedding is the eclipse.
Thank goodness I just talked to the owner and he, at first, was acting as if this was nothing. (though he appreciated
my offering glasses to his worker). I discussed the driving issues and he decided to reschedule a few days later
(moving things around) and thanked me for a heads up as he was not really thinking about it.
WHEW!!!
Normally, it is about 3 hours to Casper. They expect the traffic to be extremely heavy on I-25 and there may be a point where you just can’t go any farther north. The interstate could just become a parking lot. From Cheyenne to Casper, there aren’t that many services (gas, food, etc). Some of the exits are 30-45 miles apart, and when you get there it is just a road to someone’s ranch, no services. My daughter’s boyfriend lives in Casper and says it is already crazy
On the news tonight there was a story about a high school in Wyo that has delayed the start of school and will be renting camping spots on the football field. Included are use of the school’s bathrooms and showers, breakfast, the students at the school (about 65) will be holding fundraisers of selling food and other things. $100 per person (maybe it was per car?) I hope they make a fortune.

This website has the list of reputable vendors of solar glasses. The list is long.
(I don’t see Grease Monkey on the list but I don’t know where they may have gotten the glasses from–they still may be good but not listed–maybe you could find out)
A friend of mine is staying at a Girl Scout camp in Nebraska. She’s flying out Friday. Some friends of mine got a campsite last week at a campsite in SC for $30, an hour from totality. i told her to expect it to take three hours minimum to get into range. I think they are among the thousands who think they’ll just stop alongside the interstate.
Not a bad strategy, possibly! I am sure no one will enforce traffic on that interstate. When the Kingdome was imploded here in town, folks just drove up on i-5 ramps and stopped to watch. The freeway was blocked in both directions and cops were obviously too busy to even bother with those who stopped on ramps and along I-5.
Eclipse glasses are hard to find at this point (particularly getting them in time). Several sites note getting them in stock sometime next week which at this point is really ordering early for the 2024 eclipse. Wonder how many of those will get lost in the next 6.5 years. LOL
I am heading to Nashville on Monday morning with someone from work. We will fly out early Monday morning. Flight home takes off an hour after the totality ends. We likely will remain at the airport the entire time (or very close by). Watch lead up to totality and totality and then head back for airport screening. Later flights were all booked.
Not sure what they plan on doing about it, but we’ve had several reports about concerns from Highway Patrol about people just pulling over on interstates. Fear that people won’t be paying attention and high number of wrecks.
Re glasses, you need to read the side and see who made them. My parents live in small town and got there’s from IGA (small town grocery) and they were manufactured by one of approved companies even though they said IGA.
Boston will not be in the path.
The highway patrol in Oregon has been sternly warning everyone not to pull over to the side of the highway to watch the eclipse. They say that by law the road shoulders must be kept open for emergencies and emergency vehicles and they promise cite all violators. I don’t know about other states.
