I am a freshman at AU majoring in economics.
I am a californian living abroad.

AU is a great school but I am looking at possibly transferring to my hometown.
I heard economics is good at UCSD but is it better than what I would receive at AU?

Thank you!

Are you referring to American University in Washington DC?
If you’re a Californian, can you get in-state tuition at UCSD?

IMO, American is an overpriced private. Better value at UCSD, especially for econ major.

lots of freshmen fantasize about what could have been. “if only I had gone to X I would be so much happier, better educated, yadayada.” There are reasons why you chose X over Y. Write them down. Have those several reasons turned out not to be the case? were you misguided about them? Then write down why you’re now thinking Y would be so much better than X. How do you know those reasons are any more valid now than when you ignored them 9 months ago? have you learned anything new about Y? or is it just what you’ve learned about X? Is there any chance that the things you don’t like about X you wouldn’t also dislike about Y?

If, for instance, you miss your h.s. friends when you’re at X, will your friends be at Y if you transfer there? would more time with your X classmates give you an opportunity to create the friendships you miss from home?

It takes many freshmen longer than a semester to settle in to a new university. They have to give up some of their attachment to the old and take up the challenges of attaching to the new. Going off to college is a big change for almost everyone, one that you’ve never experienced before. Give yourself a year and you’ll probably find yourself loving American.

Meantime, keep your GPA up so that transferring will be easy. You can only transfer to UCSD or another UC after 2 years of study, so you wouldn’t be able to transfer directly to UCSD from American. You could apply now to transfer to some other college near home for next August and then wait and see how you feel in June about leaving American. I’m betting you’re going to like American a lot more in June than you do now.
