Economics and Mathematics Double Major

How appealing are these two majors to employers? What kind of jobs are well associated with these two subjects? What is a rough estimate of the average starting salary out of college with these majors out of a good college such as NYU or Carnegie Mellon?

Most people do this if they want to go into finance or consulting as proof that they have quant skills and/or their school doesn’t have finance as a major or something. In truth, you can major in art history and still work in a reputable firm. You just have to have a high GPA.

Math courses help you if you wish to pursue graduate school in economics. But you asked for employers, so I doubt that’s what you had in mind.

Best of luck.

Starting salary in the Bay Area (high cost of living area) is somewhere between $50K and $85K. That’s a large range because I don’t know exactly and because it depends on the company and the position. Mostly you will be looking at business analyst type jobs in either as an employee or a consultant at a large consulting firm. If you want to be a quant on Wall Street, CMU has a prestigious (and difficult to get into) quantitative finance major.
