Economics @ UCSD

Are the economics courses at UCSD highly math intensive and do they require extensive use of Excel spreadsheets (more specifically, courses like Microeconomics A, Game Theory, and International Trade)?

I’ve noticed that half the courses require either 10 or 20 series math as a prerequisite, so how much does math/spreadsheets come into play in these classes?

Thanks in advance!

I’ve never used spreadsheets in an econ class.

I’ve often used very basic calculus in econ classes.

micro series is all basic derivatives, bounded maximization, etc.

game theory uses parameterization

international trade… will probably use stata or sas

any decent econ program will be very math intensive. if you try taking any of the grad courses without having a background in real and complex analysis, youll likely not recognize anything people are even talking about

I forgot most of my calc. Is it possible to excel as a Econ Minor with only a weak knowledge of calculus?

It’s possible.

You just need to know basic derivatives.
