What is the economics dept. like?

I don’t exactly know what to tell you but I do intend to major in Economics and have spoke to the faculty member about it… The program is more focused on writing and improving one’s communication skills and not so much a solid preparation for a PhD in Economics. I was told that if I am interested in a PhD in Economics, I would have to go to the Maths department to pick up the relevant skills to go about it. =)

If you wish to enter, there is an honor’s program that requires a little more work and goes into more depth, especially your senior year. Mostly, they ask specific people at the end of their sophmore year who are tracking to be in economics and have a specific grade point or higher to be in it. Several Economic majors at Kenyon take either a minor in statistics or a second major in Math. Be aware that there is absolutely no accounting classes offered at Kenyon. Some financial firms are specifically looking for this when you graduate. IMHO, I think the school should offer at least one course in it. They don’t apparently offer it as they strictly adhere to the liberal arts dogma. I would suggest taking one from your local community college during a summer break if you can, however. It may help you in getting hired later. I, also, strongly recommend that you look for a good internship (between your junior and senior year) at a company where you would be happy eventually working. Most of them lead to jobs upon graduation and you will not have to worry as much your senior year taking time for interviews when you have your heaviest work load due.

Just a question: How easy is it to get an internship at Kenyon? And a internship means you have to shift to erm let’s say Philly or NYC during Summer?

Professors might get you connections, but in my experience the CDC (career development center) is worthless. I have had some pretty amazing internships but they were all on my own accord (reaching out, applying, interviewing). None of my career experience thus far is thanks to Kenyon.

Thanks. How useful is the CDC?

I read that Kenyon is part of the selective LA consortium which kinds of make it easier for people to get a job. Thus, I expect it to be kind of decent.

How’s the externship program? Frankly speaking, I dont think job-shadowing people for a few days is that useful. What do you think?

Thank you!

The extern program is amazing, of course it depends also on you. If you don’t expect them to let you run a business or let you discover a new drug than you should be happy. I went to Boston and i shadowed for 5 days a research lab. Now i know what it is like and i can make further decisions.

It is really cool trust me
