EC's in Pre-Reads

I am a Junior, and I am just getting into recruiting etc. I am looking at a few ivy league schools, and the coach says that I will have to submit a pre-read. My grades are solid, but my EC’s are very strong, probably my strong point. For my sport the coach does not have formal recruiting power, but he can give me a recommendation given I pass the pre-read which gives me roughly 80% acceptance rate. I worry that if I don’t submit my EC’s I won’t pass the Pre-read. Do I include them when I submit my pre-read?

The coach will tell you what they want for the official admissions pre-read that will happen this summer. Typically they want a transcript, school profile, test scores, senior year schedule, and resume. Your resume would have all your ECs on it, so if you don’t have one, get that done sooner rather than later. You can ask the coach your specific pre-read questions as things get closer to happening.

Agree with @Mwfan1921 . Definitely ask the coach.

But I’m unclear what you mean by “no formal recruiting power” and why that would involve a pre-read.

Typically in Ivy recruiting coaches can support a limited number of athletes through the admissions process. Those athletes typically have a pre-read and if that’s positive and they’re supported by the coach the chance of admission is higher than 80%. I would call formal support “formal recruiting power” even if the coaches aren’t making the admissions decision.

Perhaps there’s something different going on that I’m just unfamiliar with, but are you sure you’re clear on the process?

In either case the coach will help you put your best application forward, but a fully supported Ivy recruit doesn’t need to worry too much whether ECs will be sufficient.

I’m also confused by this. What is your sport?

I am also a bit confused. My son was asked for transcript, test scores, and school profile for his pre-reads. Nothing else. But, his pre-reads were in the context of a coach with slots to be offered. I dont know what a pre-read means when a coach doesn’t have a slot to offer.

Sorry you are all correct. I play squash. If I pass the preread then the coach will support my application. Thank you so much it was all very helpful

in D1, your squash ranking and grades will be substantially more important than your ECs.

  • Squash ranking ==> how much coaches like you
  • Grades ==> Satisfy pre-read requirements, so the coach had full power to recruit you.

Best of luck
