i swear, we need to just compile all the EC questions into one forum XD.

so question: when you mentioned your ECs in your personal statement, how is anyone avoiding repeating the same description they put in the EC/Volunteer section of the app?

personal story: i am a tutor, i read out to kiddies, and i also have an online writing workshop thingie. (yes, i am pretty pathetic in the EC section, but anyway.) as swell as those may be, i’m not sure i can get much juice out of them for the PS, other than what i DO at them and that i enjoy them. so now, i’m at this juncture where i’m wondering if i should just leave three-four sentences referencing to the ECs and just, move on. word limit issues and all.

any suggestions/proposals?

You can start with “why do you enjoy them?” What did you learn from your ECs? Have you grown as a person because of your ECs? Any qualities developed/bad habits you got rid of because of your involvement? Any anecdotes you’d like to share? How has your involvement developed your interest in your chosen major?

would even little things be like: “discovering the joys of teaching”, “in awe of the development of this and that”, etc etc be of any particular interest? because i can’t imagine those kinds of words/statements would be very stimulating for any admission officers to read. it’s so simple and while it’s TRUE i have felt these things - it’s utterly cliche and seems like i’m pushing it, when i’m earnest.

the toughest thing about writing my PS, is sounding earnest and sincere. which i am, but it’s hard to avoid sounding like i’m forcing it. it’s times like these where, oddly enough, sending a voice recording of your personal statement would seem sufficient enough to carry tone and passion.

(thanks btw. don’t wanna seem like i was ungrateful for your help)

Haha, I’d prefer doing a voice recording as well, it’d make like easier for me.

A personal statement saying you “discovered the joys of teaching” wouldn’t be as interesting as, say, sharing certain aspects of the job that led to that discovery. Share anecdotes. How you tell these anecdotes can be a great way of showing how sincere and earnest you are about your ECs.

thanks! it’s always more easier and simpler when knowing what you need to do. but its an entirely different story when executing it. regardless, i think i get where i’m heading now. the problem is word limit. gah.

You’re welcome! Good luck!
