ED Applicants: What Were Your Essay Topics?

phew. im glad someone else had long essays, too

champs, i like it…it depends on how it’s written, of course, but it’s definately interesting

Yeah, mine was around 800ish too. I was a bit worried about that, but apparently I’m not alone. I wrote about this summer college program I went to last summer and the ways it helped me grow as a person and prepare socially and academically for uni.

I wrote about how my father going to jail changed my life and ultimately made me a stronger and more responsible person. My first draft was close to 1200 words, but I was able to whittle it down to around 760. Do they take into account during admissions the fact that some applicants can’t follow directions? lol

well…technically speaking, my essay was UNDER two pages (single spaced) so i followed directions partially

wow, nice. 1200–> 760!

mine was less than 400 words… I wrote about giving Beethoven a rose.

same…

I wrote about how being the “bride” at an impromptu gay “marriage” over the summer changed my outlook on the homosexual community and life in general. It sounds weird, but yeah, it actually happened.

I wrote my obituary.

mine was around 650 words (two pages double spaced) I’m not an ED applicant though! lol dont hate
I wrote about how my unexpected run to the scripps national spelling bee sparked my passion for language and gave me the motivation to succeed throughout high school (that sounds cliche, but its not worded like that)

hm like that famous Brown essay about hands?

the one that ends:
I have confidence that they will become the hands of an M.D. with the power to heal and comfort solemnly implicit, and I have every hope that these hands will someday, thrilled and proud, touch the opened Van Wickle Gates of Brown University as they enter.

“I wrote about how my unexpected run to the scripps national spelling bee sparked my passion for language and gave me the motivation to succeed throughout high school (that sounds cliche, but its not worded like that)”

You went to the National Spelling Bee? What year?

^2006  (I only ever tried once because I didnt know about it until then, and it was my last year in middle school lol ■■■)

Why do u americans call it a spelling bee? what is a bee? where did it come from?

[Origin of the Term Spelling Bee | Scripps National Spelling Bee](Origin of the Term Spelling Bee | Scripps National Spelling Bee)

I wrote about getting lost in Paris and how it helped me discover the true meaning of independence. Might sound a bit random and cheesy, but I’m happy with it.

that’s awesome. I went to the national spelling bee in 8th grade in 2006 as well. lost in round 4. never worked it into my ED app, though.

also, I wrote about the time I was on a train to DC and solved the Rubik’s cube with this random Hispanic guy for hours. the message turned out to be a little cliche–breaking sociological barriers and all that–but I was satisfied with it.

@greatwhite- lol that’s awesome! i got out in round 4 also! (round 5 was the first ESPN round…darn! lol) thats cool we were in the same room

Is it really okay to go over 500 words and do like 800? Because I’m thinking about using my common app essay but that was around 1000 words which I can probably wittle down to about 800. Don’t know how they’ll look at it though. It’s about giving my dad’s eulogy. A pretty good essay if I may say so myself, just worried about the length.

I wrote about the summer I spent abroad in Japan, and how it both shaped my language ability and my views of the world.
