Schools
(13 in total, here are a few on my mind:)

  • Assured (100% chance of admission and affordability): University of Rhode Island
  • Extremely Likely: Bryant University -RD
  • Likely: American University -RD
  • Toss-up: Babson -RD
  • Lower Probability: Brown University - RD
  • Low Probability: UPenn (Huntsman) - ED

Make sure at AU you demonstrate interest. Do a session on line etc or visit.

I like your classifications but Brown is low probability with Penn.

You have a fine profile and Italian is a different language than most.

Are you sure these are affordable?

Will you be happy at AU or Babson ?

With your stats, you can get into a lot of great schools and with $$. U of S Carolina, for example, is traditionally #1 in the Intl Bus major, and has a top Honors College for which you are certainly possible.

My daughter chose College of Charleston over U of SC Honors and AU. Charleston has the Charleston Fellows and International Scholars programs (you can google them) as part of Honors - and can do your combo there too. It’s selective - you do an interview weekend if selected. Lots of international companies in South Carolina, and Charleston specifically.

But your list classifications seem solid to me. I’m guessing Babson happens btw. And if you have Babson, why not it’s cousin (Bentley) in addition to or instead of 3rd cousin Bryant ?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, the choices are affordable. If not entirely affordable, I perceive the degree as being worthy of investing in.

I’m not sure if I will be happy at Babson or AU, to be entirely honest. The school that feels the most like me is UPenn- especially with the addition of the Huntsman program.

Regarding Brown, I classified it a bit higher because a lot of students from my school get accepted. Thus, regarding my situation, I have ā€œhigher chancesā€. It feels more reachable than UPenn.

I have other schools on the list, a few are state schools. I’m mainly looking at schools on the northeast that offer international business/business.

Do you want suggestions of colleges outside of the northeast? If not, we can move on from those. If yes, folks can give suggestions.

And costs…you say these are all affordable, but what does that mean? What have your parents said they can and will pay annually for your college education? It looks like you are anticipating need based aid. Is that correct?

I’m not looking for any recommendations beyond the northeast.

And by affordable, I mean that my parents will pay roughly $60,000. I might have additional support from other family members or from scholarships. I will also look into need based financial aid. That being said, the financial aspect of the colleges I am looking into are not something I am using as a comparative factor right now.

Well U of SC and Charleston aren’t NE but not far. U of SC is tops in the country. It’ll be likely $40k or less for you. You’d get big merit.

Can you pay $400k for Brown or how much aid would your family qualify for ? It’s not as easy as an ā€˜investment’. And it does not have a business concentration.

You can only borrow 27k over four years - which is to your benefit.

You should never apply to any schools you don’t want to attend.

But in most, not all cases, those who think anything less than Brown is a failure, will end up unhappy.

What sub function of business interests you ? Finance ? Marketing ? Accounting ? Supply chain ?

You might look at Lehigh and Villanova. And Rochester which has an open curriculum like Brown. And merit aid.

U Pitt would be a great - apply now, get a quick acceptance abd it’s an outstanding U.

Budget first though. It’s not something you can avoid. Talk to your parents about what they can afford. Without loans. Have them run the Brown net price calculator to see if it’s close. Those who apply without worrying about budget often end up disappointed when they can’t attend.

If you don’t want to be further south than DC, I think there are other options you certainly can consider. And you already have some good options on your list.

How far west would you go? Is western PA too far? What about Ohio?

I live in the northeast. I will agree that University of South Carolina has a very well regarded international business program.

BUT the schools in SC ARE far from the NE, especially if you plan to drive. We had a kid who went to grad school in North Carolina…which is closer, and we thought it was quite far (but he was very open to attending schools in the southeast, and he was in a great program for him).

And you are very clear about wanting school suggestions in the northeast.

I’m not looking for any recommendations beyond the northeast.

I’m a little unclear about your intended major. In your OP, you mention two foreign languages (Korean and Italian) , but then somewhere this has segued into international business. Could you please clarify what you are looking for as possible majors.

Yeah, Brown is not worth investing in for me. I am not entirely sure how much aid they would give me- I will be one of three in college.

I already have some of the schools you mentioned on my list. When it comes to budgeting, I’m considering the potential for aid. I.e. when it comes to Ivy Leagues, the potential for aid is low, but when it comes to state schools, the potential for merit aid is high. That’s impart why I only have two Ivy Leagues on my list: Brown and UPenn.
While Brown doesn’t entirely feel like me- I like a professional environment- the open curriculum would enable me to build my desired education …though I don’t deem that promising for 90k a year.
My top three college choices right now are:

  1. UPenn Huntsman
  2. AU
  3. Babson

I’m looking to apply for international business, management, or economics.

UPenn Huntsman program is an international business program that includes the studying of a language- while there I could pursue Korean or Italian, while pursuing a degree in economics/business.

Then are you looking for college international business programs that also have these two languages? Or can your language study be independent of college.

For UPenn, would you attend if you didn’t get into the Huntsman program? ED is a binding acceptance.

Yes, I would attend if I didn’t get accepted. There is an option to only apply to Huntsman ED and be considered for RD upon regular decision.

And, yes, I would be looking to further study either language. Whether it is outside of school or not, it is a plus if I can weave it into my coursework.

I put to the net price calculator for Brown in the last message. Have your parents fill it out. It will show what Brown will cost although that cost may be different if there’s only one or two in school. Lehigh, which I suggested and is strong in Intl Business meets need too.

Rochester meets need as well, like Brown has an open curriculum.

You should run the NPCs for AU and Babson in in addition to Brown.

Intl business isn’t a field per se - it’s more on a global level that you’d desire to work but you’d still want a specialty - finance, supply chain, IS, marketing etc.

I work for a global company and worked for another (different continent) prior. You’ll have ā€˜duties’ like a domestic but will deal with different cultural factors. Manage my, as an example, is a major that draws amongst the lowest salaries of business majors because it’s not a specialty per se. It’s generic.

While you may not be interested in South Carolina, this explains better to you what I’m saying. I’d expect it to be similar at any B school in relation to an IB major.

ā€œAll IB students pursue a second, functional major within business, gaining specific knowledge and skills in their choice of accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, operations and supply chain, real estate or risk management and insurance. ā€œ

Is your reason for being Northeast because it’s where you want to be long term or comfort etc ?

If Ohio is not too far away, I would suggest you look at the Ohio State University.

The FAFSA no longer considers the number of siblings in college at the same. Schools using the CSS Profile have their own policies regarding this….so you will need to check each college of interest.

When applying for Huntsman ED, you will be asked whether Wharton or CAS is your preferred single-degree option. You will also have the choice to defer consideration for the single-degree choice to RD if you are not admitted to Huntsman ED.

Besides the other schools and the other aspects we’re discussing, would you believe UPenn is a viable option to consider? Or better said- would it be worth shooting a shot at UPenn? Truthfully speaking, I have a few friends who I believe don’t have much of a shot at schools like those, but I have no idea where I fall on the table. I can’t tell if I am qualified to be considered by the school or not.

Yeah, I have Wharton as my second option as of right now.

You can’t get accepted if you don’t apply. And you know this program is highly competitive. So…sure, apply to UPenn, but have your other applications submitted as well. If you get accepted to Penn ED, you can withdraw those other applications.

And check and see if there are any restrictions for applying early action to other colleges. If not…do that too wherever you can.
