ED vs public school

if i apply for ED and public school with full scholarship, can i give up ED for public school after both get accept?

Technically yes as ED agreements are not legally binding, but it is frowned upon and could have negative consequences…

Yes, you can unless the ED school has specific rules against this, and I don’t know any that do. Usually ED schools do specifically permit student to apply to rolling and early admissions state school. If the financial aid does not work out at the ED, school, and the state school is less in cost, one can decline the ED offer and be released. This is specifically permitted. Do read the ED policies and restriction carefully before applying ED to a school. Make sure you understand the rule well and what the stipulations are to be released from an ED acceptance. But in the case you are describing, you would be fine most all of the time.

Thanks for the clarification

@cpt - what are the rules if OP doesn’t hear about the scholarhsip until later in the admissions cycle - perhaps March.

ED typically requires a deposit within a couple weeks of admission notification. This deposit also will contain a commitment to withdraw all other applications. If OP sends in deposit to ED school in December, then finds out about full ride in March, I would think there would be negative consequences - if not for the applicant, then at least for the GC and high school’s future applicants to the jilted ED university.
