Are there colleges/Universities not as reachy as Brown, but with Eng. Dept’s kind of similar to Brown’s? (appealing to the provocative, contemporary, creative thinker?)

Oberlin…

…As well as Bennington, Vassar, Sarah Lawrence, Earlham, Beloit, Bard, Hampshire, Swarthmore, Kenyon, Grinnell, Macalester, Carleton…

I actually guessed all of those but the last 2, carolyn. Just wanted to kind of get a confirmation, I guess, of my own impressions. Too bad Bennington is so $$$ and Vassar is so not-need-blind.

My slightly “edgy” S visited 11 of Carolyn’s 12 excellent suggestions, applied to 6 of them and got in to 5. He chose Sarah Lawrence, for drama and writing excellence. Beloit offered him merit aid and was his second choice…all 12 schools on that list are terrific.

Thanks, lantern. And while reviewing & remembering, I now also remember that Connecticut College has a similar stimulating & cross-thematic approach. On the other hand, I was classically trained. That’s fine. I loved my training, but it’s not necessarily the best or most efficient way to ignite the mind of the non-traditionally inclined student. I am intrigued & really excited by these Engl. Dept’s.

surprised no one has mentioned wesleyan- definitely edgy, and a fantastic english dept.

good point

Yes! (huskem) --Another one I forgot about.

…(Awaiting further embarrassment)…

…however, on re-reviewing Wesleyan, their Eng. Dept. is not quite as intriguing to me as Vassar’s or Bennington’s or Sarah Lawrence’s. That is despite the fact that W is definitely quite fascinating overall, & in a number of other dept’s, i.m.o.

Does Emerson College have an ‘edgy’ English dept.? I’ve heard mixed reviews

Berkeley? At least a good portion of it is “edgy,” and all of it is top notch, although out of state it might be as reachy as Browns in general. You might look into other UCs, maybe, as I think UCSC might fit the bill, as might . . . others.

I hate Brown. NO one from my school gets into Brown, but we have like 20 people who got into Stanford.
