Hi Williams,
I’m a transfer student entering the class of 2027. I got what appeared to be a very generous need-based grant from Williams initially. Combined with the Pell Grant and an outside scholarship, I was set up to completely pay the cost of college. However, I recently discovered that Williams takes the policy of subtracting the Pell Grant and outside scholarships from your need-based Williams grant, dollar for dollar. This leaves me with several tens of thousands of dollars in college expenses I thought I had paid for and now must come up with before I graduate.
Do I have an accurate understanding of the situation? Does Williams even attempt to allow you to use some of this money towards your actual family contribution (EFC)? Has anyone had any success using their Pell Grant or outside scholarship money to pay the EFC without going through Williams’s official channels? I usually take great care to handle these types of things as I’m supposed to, but I have no inclination to do so after a deceptive move like this on behalf of the college.
