Educate me: flight cancellations. (interview travel snafu)

DD is currently en route back to college after an MD/PhD interview. The first leg of her flight was canceled and the airline couldn’t get her another flight until tomorrow morning. Their advice? Rent a car and drive the 2 1/2 hours to the city of her connecting flight (there was just enough time to do this). However, none of the rental car companies would rent to her one way. (I’m not sure if the issue was wanting to rent one-way or that she is 21.) She found someone else in the same predicament and they shared a cab to the connecting city. (she really didn’t want to miss her 8 am class tomorrow.). Does anyone know if we can get a refund for the portion of the trip that was canceled (weather related)? This application process is stressful and expensive enough even without travel snafus!

Weather related cancellations are not eligible for any remuneration. Been there, done that last Friday night

Actually sometimes weather related issues do get the attention of the airlines. BUT usually this is only if they can’t rebook you within 3 days (DS had a number of trips where the airlines offered free rebooking or a refund on a trip not taken because very bad weather was forecast for days). Since they offered your daughter a flight the next day, I don’t think there is a lot you can do.

The most I got for a weather-related delay (in the 1980) was a hotel room, meal ticket & flight the next day. Don’t think most airlines would be too helpful or obligated when the problem is the weather. Wish it were different but don’t think so. Other people who were cancelled due to weather when I was in DC I think passengers got nothing other than being ALLOWED to sleep (lying where they could) at the airport & booked on a later flight when they waited for flights to resume (no flights in or out due to snow and ice).

I would call and ask for compensation (ask for refund, you will probably get a voucher)for the flight segment that they were unable to provide. (It never hurts to ask!) Is she a frequent flier of that airline? If so, they might be more accomodative.

Thanks for the responses. No, not a frequent flyer on that airline.
