Detroit’s official unemployment rate, the one the federal government reports, is about 28%. The 50% figure includes estimates of so-called underemployed people (working part-time because they can’t find full-time jobs) and people who are out of work but no longer looking (presumably because it seems pointless to look for jobs where there are none).

<p>Therefore, 50% of the job market is FUBAR, despite all of that money being poured into Detroit. Whatta mess.</p>

<p>Look on the bright side. As I posted on another thread, Germany and Sweden are starting to offshore some of their jobs to the U.S. because we pay lower wages than they do. When our workers all become desperate enough to accept any wage, maybe all our outsourced jobs can come back to America.</p>
