My daughter just finished her first year at UVM (University of Vermont) and is interested in transferring. She is studying Education. Specifically she would like to be a middle school math teacher.
I can’t find anything on CC about Boulder’s Education program. Does anyone know anything about it?
She finished the year with a 4.0, and had the same in high school. Do you know how competitive it is to get into this program as a transfer, and what else is taken into account other than GPA?
She shouldn’t have any problem getting into that program. But you should keep in mind that other universities in Colorado have better local reputations for teacher education and stronger ties to local school districts. Your daughter might consider looking at MSU Denver, UNC, or Regis (full-disclosure: I work with social studies licensure students at MSU Denver). If she wants to teach in Colorado, those partnerships between universities and school districts are more important than overall school ranking. Or, alternatively, she can get her undergrad degree in math and then pursue a post-Bac teaching licensure program, which would include just the education courses and field placements/student teaching. In that case, one possible pathway would be a math degree at CU Boulder and then a licensure program at any of the schools I mentioned above.
True. She doesn’t know where she wants to live when she graduates, and this is part of what started the problem. It’s hard for an 18 year old to know that! Anyway, California has many more requirements to earn credentials, so in some ways you are at a disadvantage if you don’t go to school in CA. She would like the option to teach here, but doesn’t know 100% that that’s what she wants to do. It feels so limiting to only be able to look at schools in California, especially because most schools only have education courses in Jr/Sr years. She was interested in Boulder because it seems like a more comprehensive program with lots of time in the classroom and focused on learning about educating throughout the 4 years. That’s hard to find.
