EECS major living in units?

I am admitted into Cal for eecs and I’ll definitely go to Cal since it’s my dream school. Now I’m trying to find the best dorm. Originally I root for the units since most people say they are nicer, but the engineering department is kind of far. So can anybody estimate how long it would take to walk from the units to the engineering departments? What’s your opinion/suggestion if I pick the units as my top choice? Thanks!

Your first semester schedule will likely include:

Math 1A, 1B, 53, or 54 – often in Evans, but could be anywhere
Physics 7A – often in LeConte, but lecture could be anywhere (but labs in LeConte)
maybe Chemistry 1A or 4A – often in Pimentel/Hildebrand/Latimer/Tan
CS 61A – often in Pimentel/Soda
Humanities / Social Studies breadth – could be anywhere

See [Home Page - Online Schedule Of Classes](http://schedule.berkeley.edu) for actual classroom locations, and then look at the map here: [Interactive map - UC Berkeley](http://www.berkeley.edu/map/3dmap/3dmap.shtml)

The closest dorms would be Foothill/Stern/Bowles, then Unit 1. On the other hand, even the furthest dorms (Clark Kerr) would only be about a 20 minute walk.

I’m an EECS major in Unit 2.
It’s not that bad. :)

You’ll be walking everywhere anyways. Foothill or units don’t make much of a difference.

Berkeley’s campus is really small compared to most other campuses - you can easily walk across it in 10 minutes. Don’t choose a dorm based on distance.

I lived in Unit 3 for two years and there were a lot of EECS/other engineering majors on my floor both years. You need to live in a unit to get the full freshman year experience. It seriously felt like everyone got a giant infusion of Cal spirit during their first weekend in the units. I can’t think of one person from my floors who wasn’t happy or didn’t love Berkeley.

The only complainers I know are people who chose to live in Foothill, completely missed out on having a social life, and blamed Berkeley for it. Do not be one of these people!

Thanks everybody! I guess I’ll apply for the units, very likely unit 1. Is it hard to get into a double there? Can anybody please tell me how Cal assign a dorm room to freshmen? I’m just wondering if applying for housing early would make any difference and improve my chance of getting the room I want.

Hahaha, but I don’t agree with you flutterfly_28.
