EEP(CNR) Double Major in L&S? AP Credit? IIEOR?

Hi!
Hopefully you can provide some insight or even answer my questions! : )))))

I’m a high school senior and am taking the following AP Exams:
Chinese Lang. & Culture
English Lit
Gov
Calc AB

I’ve been admitted to Berkeley as an Environmental Economic and Policy (EEP) Major in the College of Natural Resources. I’ve looked through the undergrad handbook for CNR and this is what it said in regards to AP credit: “You may satisfy the first half of the R&C requirement with one of the following scores:AP Exam in English Literature and Composition: 4•5 AP Exam in English Language and Composition: 4 • or 5”

Another piece of information that I have questions about-I’m hoping to be able to double major into a field that I’m more interested in OR change my major to Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. I realize that getting into IEOR is EXTREMELY difficult as they only admit about 25 people per year…

Qeeestions:

 1. Does anyone know if any of the AP tests I will be taking (apart from Lit) will have ANY benefit for me at Berkeley? I will just cancel the tests if there is no benefit.

Is there a specific formula for finding a good double major to match with EEP?

2a. Do people only double majors in things that have some overlap for classes, or can it be a completely different major/interest that doesn’t relate to the previous major at all?

2b. Any advice for double majoring in L&S and CNR?

What are good ways to prep myself and make myself a more appealing applicant to become a IEOR major?

AP calculus can be useful; see http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1305840-freshman-math-faq.html</a> . A 3 or higher on AP Chinese will fulfill the foreign language requirement of L&S, if not already fulfilled. A 3 or higher on AP US government can fulfill the American Institutions requirement if not already fulfilled. With a 4, it can also allow substituting an upper division American politics course for Political Science 1 if you do a political science major.

Depends on what you are interested in. People do both overlapping majors (e.g. math + physics) or non-overlapping majors (e.g. math + music). You do not have to take a second major; you can just add electives in other subjects of your interest. Double majors across divisions need to fulfill the breadth and other requirements of both divisions.

See here for changing into or adding the IEOR major:
[Change of College (into COE) ? UC Berkeley College of Engineering](Change of college - Berkeley Engineering)
[Undergrad Academic Programs](http://ieor.berkeley.edu/AcademicPrograms/Ugrad/index.htm)
Note that there is an ORMS major in L&S which is run by the IEOR department. However, it is capped and also subject to competitive admission. But it may have somewhat fewer requirements so you may be able to add it as a second major more easily than IEOR.

THANK YOU ucbalumnus!!!

Hey, but since I’m in CNR for EEP, do the AP credits follow the CNR or L&S guideline? Or both?

Also, do you have any experience or advice for doubling majors? I heard if I go to Cal (as opposed to UCLA, which is my second choice) maintaining a good GPA will be near impossible… and I will have zero social life because of the competitiveness. :frowning: Any advice/responses?

WOW THANK YOU!!! I will definitely consider the ORMS major for a second major as I doubt I have the competitive edge needed to get into the IEOR department.

Again, Thank you very very much ucbalumnus!!!

If you double major in a CNR major and an L&S major, then your AP credits follow CNR rules for the purpose of CNR requirements and the CNR major and L&S rules for the purpose of L&S requirements and the L&S major (plus each major’s rules if it has specific ways of using the AP credit).

Here are the division-level uses of AP credit; check with each major for how AP credit may apply to the major:
