Is it true that Michigan recalculates a students FAFSA EFC by combining the income/assets of the custodial and noncustodial parent equally or is it more complicated than that (i.e. noncustodial only accounts partially)?

I believe it may be slightly more complicated then that, but not a lot. So yes, in using the CSS, it will consider the resources of your non-custodial parent for certain, and will accordingly expect a contribution depending on income/assets etc. That’s because much of the grant money Michigan offers is its own institutional funding. They use institutional methodology to calculate need.

In addition, Michigan is ONLY a “meets-need” school for in-state students, not OOS students. So that will have some bearing on your package as well.

You might wish to call them and give them your UMID to get better answers, but that gives you a bit of an idea.
