EFC of zero. how much fin aid?

I am an incoming freshman. I’m going to Indiana university bloomington. i have an efc of zero. i will be an instate student. will my tuition and room and board be covered?

Did you complete and submit FAFSA? Did the school not provide you with a financial aid package?

No way to answer! You will get guaranteed with an EFC $0…$5900 in Pell Grant, and $5500 in Direct Loans.

Does Indiana have any grant aid for low income students? If so…you probably would get that too.

Did you check their NPC? Or you can wait for FA package.

I found this on the IU website:

You can call to see if you are being considered for this.

@brantly

And would the student get this Promise award PLUS a Pell and the Direct Loan? If so…that would be very very close to covering full costs…if the student had a job now and in the summer.

Good luck @hoosiers1822 let us know!!

The way I read it, it’s in addition to the Pell grant and direct loan.

Here is the Net Price Calculator: https://npc.collegeboard.org/student/app/indiana

Run that to get an idea of what your aid might look like.

Debt by Degrees is a great college search site for students with 0 EFC. It looks like Pell grant students graduate with an average of 19,500 in debt.

Run the NPC. I doubt that everything will be covered with free money. Likely you’ll be awarded some loans and work study, and perhaps a small gap that you’ll have to earn over the summer. Public univs rarely provide all costs covered in free money. They don’t usually want to cover incidentals like food, books, and toothpaste, shampoo, and travel costs

Did you register for the 8th grade college promise for Indiana disadvantaged youth?
If not, I’m not sure everything will be covered. In all cases you’re expected to be working part time during the year and saving the money, plus full time or as much as you can over the summer. You’ll have the federal loans (5.5k) as well as a Pell Grant (5.9k).
Have you run the NPC?
If not, type Indiana University net price calculator.

This looks like a last payer, so you have tuition and fees - Pell - other grants. That still leaves room, board, books, etc. The Pell will be used to pay the tuition but the loan can be used for other things.

To me this sounds like a last payer for tuition and fees

I look at it as if Indiana is $5572.21 per semester ($11, 145.02) per year, after the pell kicks in ($5920 for 0 EFC) the promise grant will pay at Max of $5225.02. This amount will go down if Op receives any other grants or scholarships.

With the $5500 loan, Op will still need money for room and board
