Egg prices, and impacts you are seeing

Availability of products can be a function of timing. If you are at the store when the scarce items are put out, it may be available until they run out. That is the case in Honolulu—there were eggs at Costco and then later on nextdoor someone posted the same store had no eggs. In any case, it does seem like eggs and sone other products are definitely more scarce than previously.

Why do we call it a surcharge? Just increase the menu price!

Maybe because if and when egg prices come down, then can more easily get rid of the surcharge and it’s not absorbed into future prices?

I used to buy Vital farms brand pasture raised eggs at my local grocery for $7.99
Today I looked and they were $13.99 for a dozen!

Kroger in Colorado (operates as King Soopers and City Market). They are going on strike in most stores on Thursday.

Interesting, Kroger has a big presence here.

I think it is all local and not even every King Soopers or City Market here will strike. They were trying to merge with Albertson’s/Safeway but the attorney general filed an action against the merger and this came out of it.

In the city of Denver, minimum wage is $19.xx and most employers pay slightly more than that

Someone is taking matters into their own hands: About 100,000 eggs worth $40K stolen from trailer in Pennsylvania

I listen to a food podcast and it is UNCANNY how many food heists happen in Pennsylvania!!! :flushed:

What does one do with that many eggs? Unlikely they can sell them on the black market! ANd its kinda cold for outdoor farmers markets.

Global News (Canada) had a clever headline for this story: 100k eggs stolen from trailer as police scramble to crack case.

I think they can. If supplier #1 doesn’t have eggs, the restaurants go to supplier#2, who may have gotten the eggs from the thief, maybe knowing they were stolen or maybe not.

Isn’t there an FDA paper trail or something like that, where they can track all of this in case people get sick? Isn’t that how they track all of these other recalls?

Typically, the vendor’s invoice will carry the lot numbers for the items in the delivery. A lot number will be adjacent to the best by date on the eggs.

Tracking lots for a recall can take a longer time than you might expect. Didn’t some of the lettuce recalls take 2-3 months?

Would the lot numbers be flagged as stolen?

Even in normal times I don’t know how efficiently it would be communicated.

And recently there have been restrictions in FDA announcements. I ā€œhaveā€ been getting emails on medical device issues and dangerous food issues.

I’m thinking stolen eggs are not dangerous to health?

I usually go to Trader Joe’s in the morning but I was in the neighborhood on Tuesday so I went about 3pm. No eggs. I sent my husband this morning and they are now limiting to one dozen
