Egg prices, and impacts you are seeing

Oh please don’t  I really liked the mental picture of that lonely carton sitting there unwanted, because consumers had finally reached their maximum price point for eggs.

A very busy TJ had no eggs. This is greater Seattle area. Apparently, it had them earlier in the day because there was a sign stating ā€œ1 dozen limit.ā€ Moving on…

A very expensive grocery store had a shelf full of eggs. Six or seven kinds. I got a dozen of extra large ones for $4.79.

Was able to buy eggs yesterday from our local grocery store. $8.99 for 1 dozen large white storebrand eggs.

Local farm has large eggs $6 a dozen.

I was able to buy 2 packs of 2 dozen Eggland’s Best eggs for $8.99 per pack at BJs yesterday. Customers were limited to 2 packs. That was the best price I could find (~$4.50/dozen). Walmart’s price for one dozen store brand eggs was $5.46 (on the website) and Aldi’s was similar. Giant was asking $7.19 for a dozen, store brand! So prices are all over the place, but I’ve not heard of anyone seeing empty shelves here in South Central Pennsylvania.

Wow—people REALLY like eggs! 4 dozen eggs would take us a long time to use up. We buy them however they sell them at Costco, but only buy 18-24 at a time. I haven’t really looked for them. The times I wanted them, they were there and prices were not that different from the ā€œnormalā€ Costco prices, so we’d buy them.

Maybe they will be bartering eggs for gemstones with the neighbors

With just 2 of us, a dozen eggs lasts maybe 2 weeks(?) Unless I’m making egg casserole.

Honestly, with just two of us and even sometimes with 3, we have to remind ourselves to eat the eggs so they don’t get too old in the fridge. Our eggs last awhile, for sure. We are sure to hard boil them if we will be traveling and haven’t consumed all of them.

My adult son, who lives with me, is a vegetarian whose primary protein sources are eggs and Parmesan cheese. We will go through the 4 dozen eggs I bought yesterday in no time at all. Probably by next week.

Wow—I’m so glad you found him eggs to keep him supplied! Hope you can continue to find them @kidzncatz!

Me too! If eggs get scarce around here, he’ll have to completely rethink his diet.

Might be good to start looking at other protein sources—beans, lentils, nuts, other cheeses, etc. There’s a vegetarian thread someone started in the cafe—might be worth a look.

Our Costco was very low when I was there a few days ago. Impending bad weather never helps. Didn’t have the 2 dozen egg packs - only 18. No brown eggs - the white ones that aren’t organic or anything special. Limit 3 per customer. Price was $6.67. I won’t eat these type of eggs - I’ll go elsewhere and pay more for the certified humane.

I scored an egg buying coup. Although I didn’t yet need eggs, I looked at the egg display when I shopped at a local chain yesterday. All of the regular white eggs (store brand and others) were over $7.00 a dozen. I then noticed some local brown eggs and couldn’t believe my eyes at the prices: $3.49 for cage free, $4.79 for pasture raised. Neither I nor a woman I was talking to could understand the difference in prices; ā€œbetterā€ eggs for half the price. We both bought several dozen. The kicker: I mentioned these ā€œbargainsā€ to another customer who got there after me. She continued to look only at the white eggs. I know that the region of the country I live in has a preference for white eggs, but really. . . it’s not nearly Easter egg-dyeing time yet.

One of the morning shows had a piece on replacing eggs. At one point the voice-over said ā€œReplace scrambled eggs with scrambled tofu–delicious!ā€

At this point I nearly dry-heaved–replacing scrambled eggs with that awful tofu after-taste—YUCK YUCK YUCK!!!

Just thinking about it while typing this is giving me the shakes…

Crispy tofu with stir fry veggies - yes, please!

Scrambled tofu - gross.

I saw a news story on one of our local stations where one family contacted a rent-a-chicken company. They decided to rent chickens for the egg production. The story showed a video of the chickens being delivered to a local family.

Our township ordinance requires a minimum of three acres if a homeowner wants to have chickens. Of course, you could always do like my mom said that her grandparents’ neighbor did … keep ā€˜em in your house.

Got my eggs at Aldi. $5. I’m making deviled eggs to take to a party. The new caviar.

I went shopping at Trader Joe’s this afternoon and they still had eggs available at 2:30, but they are limiting them to 1 per person.
