You don’t really want an answer to that !

Right. That would mean Teal.

But what color of mixer makes you happiest? ;)

And dare I ask for advice on WASHERS AND DRYERS? I am entering my second bout of appliance hell, which is where planned obsolescence kicks in. I have been nursing my Kenmore dryer for 20 years and I hate my Maytag washer (leaves a ton of lint on clothes). Maybe I could be enticed to buy a new set in a fun color. Please vote for top-loader or front-loader!

Front loader, hands down. Gives you more surface space on top to put things.

Kitchenaid stand mixer. Love it, but I whip tiny amounts of whipped cream (lone hot chocolate’s worth, for example) with a manual egg beater. Takes no time at all.

Front loader. Much gentler on clothes and does a better job too.

Front loader, no question.

Does a great job, uses less water, clothes require less dryer time AND the front loader can handle big blankets.

I also have a Kitchen-Aid mixer, tilting head. White. I love it. I stuck with hand mixers for years, then finally bought the KA and didn’t know why I’d waited so long. Making cakes is effortless now.

Washers: definitely a front-loader. I have a top-of-the-line Kenmore. When I switched from my top-loader (also a top-of-the-line Kenmore, only about 8 years old), the clothes were visibly cleaner.

Dryers: I replaced my dryer a few months ago, so I have recent research on this. Someone, either here or on thathomesite.com, advised me to stick with the xx-wide ?? brand. I’ll go downstairs in a while and look at what I have and report.

Thanks for all the input. It figures that everything breaks at once. I just had to replace the refrigerator too, but got a nice deal at a Sears scratch and dent outlet. What I would really like in a clothes dryer is something with a really low temperature so I might be able to dry jeans and T-shirts without shrinking…and eliminate the nasty Maytag washer lint problem.

There was a great washer/dryer thread 6 months-1 year ago. See if you can find it. It had a lot of useful information.

I have a KitchenAid mixer and a front load washer/dryer. I must be cool! (It takes so little to give me an over-inflated ego.
)

I’ve had the KitchenAid for 19 years or so, and I’m thinking of replacing it with a newer model. Although it still works, I have to adjust it too often – and the darn bolt keeps wiggling out of the neck. Of course, I’d only replace it with another KitchenAid, but maybe with something more top-end. The problem is, I have the attachments/bowls/beaters for the lower end. :(

Momwaiting: there are numerous places that repair Kitchenaid mixers to better than new, and for a very reasonable price.

Really? I always assumed that they’d cost almost as much as a new mixer. Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into it.

Definitely front loading washing machine. I just bought a Kenmore and love it. Had a Maytag which was supposed to be “oh so much better” (and more expensive) and it was a piece of crap from the day I bought it.

In these days of planned obsolescence, nothing lasts forever, so be careful how much you pay for it.

Oh, so right, Doubleplay! My husband (believe it or not!) convinced me to splurge on the front loader when we had to relocate. I am still worried that the price may not be worth it, even though I love how it uses less water to clean a bigger load. We now have well water, so conservation is an issue.

The only thing I do not like about front loaders: how twisted the clothes get in the spin cycle. If I don’t separate the twisted pant legs/sleeves before putting them in the dryer, I get wrinkled clothes.

I hate the twisting, too, Momwaiting. It’s the only thing I don’t like about the front loader. I have to shake every garment out before putting it in the dryer.

Appliances died in the last year…first dryer, replaced with a Maytag with sensor dry. As long as they were delivering, replaced the ancient upright freezer with bad seals with a new smaller chest freezer. Then 6 months later the washer stopped working, so got the cheapest possible front loader, a Fridgidaire. Had a great rebate. With all of this, my utility bills are down $10 to $30 a month at a time of increasing rates, and the water bill is down quite a bit as well. All the new appliances work quite well, and is good to have more environmentally appropriate choices, as rates and global warming increase.

The only time I’ve had things get twisted in my front loader is if one end of something is caught in the door. Then it does get exciting.

Don’t have time to read the entire thread, so I apologize if I’m repeating someone: after more than 10 years of saying I’d wait to renovate the kitchen before getting the Kitchenaid stand mixer (not enough space) and finally getting one this past Christmas, I don’t know why I didn’t break down sooner. I love it (and mix everything from cookies to bread in it). It’s an Artisan, so the head tilts back. If I have trouble adding ingredients, I just detach the mixing tool, add the stuff, and re-attach the tool.

We got it from a kitchen supply store that sells refurbished Kitchenaid mixers and saved a lot off the list price (I think you can get these through Amazon, too, but returning might be harder), although every department store seems to hold big sales on them at times. Costco sells one model, but it’s so large we would have had to move the car out of the garage and keep it there (or do that costly kitchen renovation).
