Electric Mixers

What kind do you have and do you like it? I am tempted to try a KitchenAid, but I have heard that some people don’t like them for various reasons. Any opinions?

I like my KitchenAid. I’ve had it for about 15 years I guess, and have had no problems!

I also have a KitchenAid and have been happy with it, but you might want to check Consumer Reports and any other consumer-related websites. KitchenAid has mixers of varying sizes/abilities, and there are some that are more heavy-duty/expensive than others. Also, I love the various colors!

I’ve had a KitchenAid for 20+ years and would never be without it. However: my mother liked mine so much that she went up a step to the one where the head doesn’t tilt and the bowl drops down instead (real technical language there!) Big mistake! It’s way more money and a big hassle every time you want to remove a bowl full of stuff from under the mixer head… messy, spills, etc. Whoever engineered that one should be shot, instead it’s marketed as the “better” version. GO with the tilt-head version. If you watch Alton Brown on the Food Network: the flames are a custom paint job.

I don’t have the tilt-head version, I don’t have a problem with removing the bowls. I’ve had it for 18 years with no problems. If I had a quibble it’s that the very bottom of the bowl isn’t always reached by the attachments.

I love my Kitchenaid. It’s 22 years old- I got it the Christmas after my daughter was born. My MIL told me that the company had been sold and that the newer ones don’t work as well as the old ones. I agree with nyumom, I would check consumer reports before buying.

I have the same on as Dragonmom’s mother - the head doesn’t tilt, and it is a big guy. It mixes just about anything - but the no-tilt is annoying. It is also so heavy that I leave it on the counter. I also have some attachments for it - the shredder is very good.

My mixer is still in bed asleep. She’s got two quarts of buttermilk on the counter so the mixer will probably be preping bread dough. Had her officially for 30 years next month. Low maintenance but some of the functions are not as smooth. Sometimes tempermental. Tilting arm works but the rotation is tighter, DMSO is occasionally used to lubricate the tilting mechanism. Only two mixing moods now, slow-high torque and medium speed-moderate torque, fast is nonfunctional which never worked well anyway. Could never coaxed this model to hurry up on anything.

CU says that its it was a 7 from a scale of 1 to 10. Some of my friends thought that she was closer to a 10. I never wanted anything that others would envy or be eventually needed to be traded in. I wanted something that I could use and abuse and still keep working on demand. I can’t use it as in the old days because it then just stops working. I gotta sweet talk it now.

Warranty turned out to be just a piece of paper; I discovered long ago that if I needed to return it, I needed a lawyer and pay all fees. I also now care for it’s manufacturers! Talk about hidden costs of ownership. I did have a trial period of use, where, in that trial period I could reject the product; But the more I used it, the more I wanted to keep it.

Not too sure about the newer models. They seem to be too flimsy to be used consistently over time. Newer models seem to have more flash and gimmicks. Nice colors too. Marketing, its all about Marketing. Got any recommendations for my son, 22 years old.

thisold, you are a witty man! Hope the bread turns out yummy.

Also love my Kitchenaid. We got it many years ago at an honest-to-goodness Mom and Pop appliance store where you can actually get things repaired and buy a fully reconditioned (like new) Kitchenaid mixer. Which is what we did.
We have the tilt-head type.

We also have, at a seasonal place, a hand-held KitchenAid mixer which is quite strong, easy to use and better than other hand-helds I have had.

thisoldman: Very, very funny! (We have a mixer like that too! Instead of being in bed sleeping, though, this mixer is lounging in bed, tapping on the internet…)

Dough mixing ain’t gonna happen today. Buttermilk back into the frig. I don’t get to break bread anymore-Real sensitive to carbos-type II. The Mixer will let me have a small handful of rolled oats but not, Her, bread. I only get to watch the mixing and nothing else. Real exciting to see how the mixer blends the ingredients together and then beats the dough into utter submission. Then to see the dough arise to see it get beaten down again. Since I’s not a masochist, I don’t really like to watch The Mixer.

taking a moment to join the thisoldman fan club.

Kudos to thisoldman. I also have one of the heavy duty Kitchenaid mixers (tilt-head variety) which my mother purchased for me maybe 8-10 years ago. I was offended at first, thinking she was criticizing my applicances  but, as usual, she was right and I eventually tossed out the piece of junk I had been using and calling a mixer.

I use my mom’s KitchenAid all of the time. Lots of times, guests are surprised when we make whipping cream from scratch for pies and desserts. It is so easy in the KitchenAid, and it is so much better tasting than CoolWhip (sp?). I talked my mom into ordering an extra mixing bowl. Very handy.

I, too, have a KitchenAid that I absolutely adore. I resisted the big stand mixer for a long time (in hindsight, can’t figure out why other than wasn’t convinced the cost was worth it; instead I burnt out hand mixers on a regular basis). Don’t know how I lived without it now. Second kollegkid’s comment about whipping cream from scratch as it’s the only way we go in our house and takes practically no time with the KitchenAid.

Mine does tilt, which I prefer for adding ingredients.

I have liked my Sunbeam stand mixer for 20 years and have given it regular use. It tips, which I like. But the design where the two beaters are stationary and the bowl spins seems to be a thing of the past. Maybe the moving beater design works better? (Or, maybe they just don’t make them like that anymore?)

Years ago, when I was first married, my husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I promptly told him a KitchenAid mixer. He gave me a mixer - but not a Kitchen Aid. He was quite excited because it combined a mixer, blender, and food processor all in one. None of which worked very well. Being the doting newlywed that I was, I kept it for about 10 years. Then I had enough and told DH that I was buying myself a KitchenAid, which I love. DH has since learned that if I specify a brand …

Get a Kitchenaid mixer. I replaced my wedding gift one a few years ago and wish I had many years ago. I like the tilt style.

I always knew that the Almighty She made humans in Her image. She is easy to please, it takes only a KitchenAid. Do you ladies have a preference in bedsheet color?
