As far as I know, there is one elevator on the North Side (Units 1 and 2), and it is old-fashioned with a gate and everything - it’s adorable and fits in perfectly with the building. It is rather slow, though, but it does end at the service entrance near the parking lot (where there are people for move-in day).
I don’t know if there is an elevator on the South side, but I am assuming there is one.
The third floor is not that bad (the floors are from the 2nd floor to the 6th floor), so you will probably have to go up a few flights of stairs. It will be faster to move in that way instead of waiting with everyone else for the elevator, so consider this when you’re packing (ie. boxes that are easily to lift and carry).

actually, which unit of balch are you in? 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, or 3-4? the second number in your 4 digit room number will tell you. depending on which unit you are in, the “3rd floor” could actually be the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd floor.

ah, so you’re on the ground floor. congratulations. just bring a dolly on move-in day and you’ll be fine. and no matter what they tell you, don’t go through the loading dock.

It’s because Balch was built into a hill. Yes, it’s the “third floor”, but it’s the first floor with rooms, and if you enter from a ground floor entrance you will be on your floor. But you’re right - the first number is the floor number.
It’s just one of the many things that makes Balch one crazy and enjoyable place to live. You’ll enjoy it. :D

The elevator only works if the gate is closed.
People forget to close the gate, thereby rendering the elevator inoperable to others

This really sucks if you just walked back from the bus stop (which is pretty far away due to the bridge detour) with your 24pack of water and want to get up to the fifth floor.

rach719 - I lived pretty close by that room number and that room is fairly close to the elevator (which is also old-fashioned and has the gate thing and all). I managed to carry all my stuff up last year though.
