I remember these words being tossed around a lot during decision time for the class of 2013…is this some sort of network unique to submitting your application for Yale? Will it be obvious when/how we need to make one?

I can’t believe we (class of 2014) are actually starting this now…it seems utterly surreal

Yeah, your Eli Account is used to access the status of all your admissions stuff (applications, supplement, SAT/ACT scores, transcript, etc.) and financial aid as well. Once decisions come out, you use your Eli Account to see whether you got in or not, and if you get in, there’s a whole bunch of goodies for which you use your Eli Account.

^ Yupp, you get your Eli Account after you send in your application.

They send you a letter/e-mail giving you your username (usually your first initial.last name.some semi-random number, i.e. for Joe Shmo it might be j.shmo.2), and a PIN so that you can activate your NetID and create a password.

Are you pretty sure that the digit after firstinitial.lastname is some semi-random number? If yes, you have just taught me something.

I always thought the single digit number which follows your last name is 2, 3, etc., (i.e., a sequential number starting from 2), depends on the number of persons whose first initial and last name happen to be the same. This is because that number is always very small. It seems to be either 2 or 3, and nobody seems to have the digit 1, if I remember correctly.

I don’t know why the number is what it is, but I knew someone with a pretty damn distinctive and unique first initial / last name who was a .3 last year, for what it’s worth. Sure, there could have been tons of Z. [unusual last name]s out there, but it would surprise me.

Mine was .3, and I kept trying to find who had .2 at that time but could not find any. Because not all admitted students logged into their Eli Accounts, I could not tell whether there was no .2, or there indeed was.

I am just curious about it. It is not because it is important. This may be a good question to ask the admission officer who sometimes would visit the web site for the admitted students. (I’m a continuing student so do not have Eli Account any more.)

I also do not know how they come up with my NetID, especially the last two digit numbers of the NetID.

It could also have been a student who didn’t get in, as all applicants get Eli IDs, not just admitted students.

I had .2, and I am absolutely positive nobody else had my last name (it’s two uncommon names, hyphenated) so I think it must start at 2.

mcat2: I totally agree. I think the number depends on how many people have your first initial and last name. I don’t know if it’s by admissions cycle or in total. I didn’t want to get into the gory details of the number, since it wasn’t too important, so I just called it semi-random. I was under the impression that the number for NetID is also based on how many people had your initials. (Again, I’m not sure if they recycle or not.) Maybe not? Mine is 22, which I don’t like, but alas, no choice.
