It keeps occurring to me that top 25 admissions is a lot like Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme. All good ponzi schemes succeed by creating an aura of exclusivity. Madoff did so well because most people thought they were so lucky to have the opportunity to invest with him. Now here I am praying for the opportunity to spend $250,000-$300,000 over the next 4 years for my oldest to go to a tippy top school. They are all so exclusive, and such a “crap shoot” and a “reach for everyone” so don’t really bother questioning whether it makes sense. $300,000 for a BA or a BS? Even if you can afford it, that’s a mind blowing number. Just apply, pray, and get the checkbook ready. Where is that rational voice that is supposed to be in my head telling me this is insane?
Doesn’t work for many; sounds like you are in that camp. Just have your child apply where it works for your family.
Some have no problem with the price (or expect to get funding) and are can tolerate that their chances may be slim at best.
