Elms College Pre Med Program

Hi everyone!

I am a Sophomore and Biology major on a pre med track and am minoring in Chemistry. I am just wondering about how reputable the undergraduate pre med program is at Elms College in Chicopee MA. I plan on transferring from the community college I am currently attending after the spring 2018 semester, to a four year school for the fall 2018 semester where I will finish my undergrad. I am considering transferring to UMass Amherst or Elms College. In an ideal world I would attend Elms because it is small and it seems like the professors really care about their students, and I believe I would do better at a smaller institution. But I am not sure if Elms is up to par with UMass Amherst, in regards to course rigor, research opportunities, acceptance rate into medical schools, average MCAT scores, etc. And if I have a better chance at getting accepted into a medical school by going to UMass Amherst because of its reputation, rigorous curriculum and opportunities (research), then I will go there because it is in my best interest. But if possible I would like to go to Elms if it is somewhat competitive with UMass Amherst.

I really want to know how rigorous the courses are at Elms, how the students do on the MCAT, and how many of the students get accepted in to medical schools (is it a couple out of the class or the majority of the class). I am also curious about the research opportunities that are available at Elms.

If anyone has any experience or information about the pre med program please let me know! It would be immensely helpful and greatly appreciated!

Going to a smaller college might be a good idea. Smaller classes, so you get to know your professors better. As long as you get a high GPA, it doesn’t matter if you go to Elms or Umass. For med school admissions, GPA and MCAT are the key factors. They generally don’t take into account the reputation of the undergrad school you went to.

Your questions about MCAT scores and med school placement are things that you shoukd ask the pre-med advisor at Elms. They can tell you that information.

UMass is surely better-known among medical school admissions personnel, but is also almost surely more competitive than Elms. I’d ask a lot of questions at Elms. Perhaps they can give you references to real, live grads who are now actual medical students. That would be reassuring.

Thank you guys so much for the advice! I will get in contact with the pre-med advisor at Elms and hopefully that will get me better informed and help me to make my descision.
