Sitting here backing up my computer in order to send it for a warranty repair and BANG Outlook glitches. I may or may not be able to repair it, but whatever I do, it’s a real hassle. I have a business domain and the email is hosted there, but it is not enough storage to hold more than a few weeks of emails.
I have email history going back nearly 10 years (deleting most, of course!) and use Outlook for the calendar and to remind myself about clients & generally manage my stream of business conversations. I am so sick of having it at risk of a computer failure.
Is it better to go to a MicroSoft 365 or a Google Work apps or just get way more storage at the current host? It’s time to do something, but I am not sure which to do. I know $5-10 per user per month does not sound like much, but we get nickeled and dimed to death already, so I want to fix this stressful situation (email history all on my computer, not available in a crash) and fix it smartly. I don’t think something like Carbonite is the answer, I would like to be able to open my old laptop and have all that old stuff download if I need it in a pinch. Contacts and calendar back up and syncing would be great. Anyone happy or unhappy with their small business email hosting?
I’ll let you know my opinion in a few weeks. My fall job used Office 365 and all of its features. I really liked it. My job starting in January uses Google. So I’ll be able to compare.
My domain name people are offering me an upgrade from a POP3 email on their site to an IMAP and they say that will sync all my folders (so inbox, inbox sub folders, sent items, deleted items); I need to verify that will work that way, but they also quote that at about half the price of Office365.
And I wonder if something like Carbonite is so seemless that it would be cheaper and smarter?
This is my opinion of Carbonite. I have no interest in any computer company. Carbonite lost all information from people I know. It is far better to back up on a external hard drive (then maybe also the cloud) but I’d choose a different company. Carbonite was a disaster for these people who lost all their stuff on it. They assumed it was backed up but it wasn’t. It can take weeks or apparently months for Carbonite to back up information. Large jobs can result in a long backlogs where a year’s worth of information you assume is saved isn’t and can be lost and was for these poeple. It is effortless and if you are lucky you won’t lose everything but don’t believe Carbonite’s claims. Also they state that they don’t stand by their claims if you have a failing hard drive. So if everything is running well and somebody walks off with your perfect computer and none of your programs have changed their extensions or upgraded in 8 months Carbonite may be the answer. But for anything else, forget it! Search information about Carbonite. They themselves sued when another company failed them but they fail to stand by their claims when their customers lose everything. You have to search hard. I guess they can bury bad stuff, not sure but it is there if you look and in my opinion the negative reviews are accurate. It works if you have no problems with anything on your computer and your computer hums along perfectly. That’s why you need backup right?
I use both Mozy *and * Crash Plan as well as an external backup HD! I’m not taking any chances after losing everything once a few years ago. Overkill, I know, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.
