ok, as a mom of one in SIS, i’ll try to answer: first of all, CONGRATS TO ALL!!! AU’s literature specifically states honors admissions have cut-offs for BOTH SATs and GPAs.
University College program is open to all, i think. it has a seminar w/it, and you must dorm with those in it, based on what seminar you take, ie, different dorms for different seminars. not a big deal
**this is important…for all wondering about money…IT SHOULD BE POSTED IN YOUR STUDENT PORTAL, UNDER FINANCIAL AID SECTION. we saw it there way before the letters, if i remember correctly. everthing should be there…grants, scholarships, loans, work-study, etc. hope this all helps!

does anyone know definitively whether honors is based on GPA, SAT scores, or a combination of factors? I know sideways said that it is based solely on GPA, but many other posters claim that it is based on SAT scores. Also, would this be unweighted or weighted GPA?

I didn’t get any money. I figure that Pittsburgh Honors with a small scholarship beats American University College with nothing.

stu64k~ go to AU’s own website…i think(?) that’s where it shows regular and honors criteria. i’m sure it uses BOTH SATs and GPA. i think it used to be 1390-1400 made it for honors, etc. of course, this will change yearly, as applicants become increasingly competitive. and most schools use their own way of determining GPA., tho weighted usually refers to honors/AP classes and they’re always wanted…hope this helps.

het stu64k…GOT IT! right from their website…here goes…for honors admission: 3.89/4.00 GPA, which they recalculatebased on academic courses, AND SAT, 1434, and ACT, 32! there you have it!

Is there a place on AU’s website that shows a formula for determining whether a student is eligible to be invited to the Honors program? If so, I haven’t been able to find it.

bumppo~ yes! that’s what i just wrote about^AU’s site, under admitted freshman statistics…see if you can get it… it shows regular accepted stats and honors, if that’s what you mean.

Got the email 3 or 4 days ago and the acceptance letter a day after. Was accepted into the school of Public Affairs but no honors-I didn’t expect to be invited anyway.

I’m not sure if I still want to go though. The campus was nice but it costs a lot to attend, I don’t have the stats to earn me a lot of merit aid, and I’m not sure I want to leave Massachusetts for college. But it sure is nice to add another acceptance letter to the pile.

HeavenWood: I just checked my D’s portal and under FA it showed only 2006-2007 with nothing available. Then I found the 2007-2008 link, selected it, selected “Fall” and it came up with a message that I was not permitted access to that URL. So, don’t despair, I don’t think the awards are posted on the portals yet even if you know you’ve been awarded an Honors scholarship. Checking under application status didn’t show an update to admitted status yet, either. It only said decisions would be made in April—and my D received her “Congratulations” email yesterday. Go figure!

AU says it is based on a % of admitted freshman. The cutoff GPA for honors differs each year because of the makeup. Ask you admission rep and they will tell you. This is my second experience with a child applying and they have said the same both times. First child received full tuition scholarship (cutoff for honors was different than this years cutoff). Last years was higher than the years before. It depends on the stats and the percentage they are offering honors to. It is a mechanical process. A certain cutoff. You are either above or belove the cutoff. It is an unweighted GPA TOO.

Proud Dad… Glad to hear that you’re experiencing the same thing with the portal and financial awards. I’ve got nothing yet either on there and was admitted yesterday. I guess it will be up soon.

Info on the Honors Program can be found at Admissions > AU Facts > Admitted Freshman Statistics. The profile says “3.89/4.00 GPA (recalculated based on academic courses); SAT 1434; ACT 32.” I assume those reflect rough averages of some kind.

I haven’t gotten anything yet… should i assume i got rejected?

You can call monday and ask. They will probably tell you it changes each year. They may be last years cutoff. I know the year before was different. My child was accepted in Honors and received a full tuition scholarship. At last springs (2006 ) info session the admissions counsler that gave the talk explained exactly how they decide honors. As I stated before is what she said. It seems to be true. You can see some of the SAT’s are a bit lower but the GPA’s are all pretty high. They may have a minimum SAT but they rely on the GPA. She said they unweight the GPAS and then take a % of the group.

ASAP - All the emails may not have been sent yet. Don’t assume anything yet. It takes them a bit to send them all out.

AU recalculates GPAs for admissions and honors from your grades. Nothing is weighted and only academic classes are counted. So what you think your GPA is isn’t necessarily what AU thinks it is.

You are right!

im sorry if this sounds a bit rude…but, do you guys mind talking about the honors college in another thread, since those of us who haven’t gotten the email feel a bit confused and annoyed, and hearing about those who got in argue about honors doesn’t make you feel any better.

I got the acceptance email!! No honors though

AMEN TO THAT! Fsu-uf… is right. It is really obnixious hearing people whine about not getting honors. Be happy you got in.
