email to the DEAN - HELP!

I have decided to write an email to the dean (or any other relevant faculty member) of FSU film school. I know this has nothing to do with USC, but FSUs threads are dead and I’ve been on the USC threads for a few weeks now. (I am a SCA applicant.) I like you guys and your opinions. I’d appreciate some feedback on this email.

It was more of a way to vent my anxiety. Please tell me if it is too needy and what else I should/should not write.

THANKS!!!

Dear Mr. blah blah,

I am an applicant for the FSU Film School’s freshman undergraduate class of 2014. Weeks have gone by since I had my interview on March 7th and I am getting very anxious. This has probably been what feels like the longest month of my life. University of Southern California was my top choice until the day I set foot on your campus and in your film school. Everyday I cannot help myself from thinking back to the interview. My mind wonders about ever detail of that day. Anyway, I would like to know when I should expect to hear first word or any kind of sign of the school’s decision. I don’t think anything has ever made me this crazy.

thats what I got. wrote it as a way to vent…

gugger:

My opinion- I understand that you are anxious and excited, but I believe your approach should show a mature senior who really loves FSU and their program. I would not send this email or letter. Instead, I would write a lovely thank you note with a few specific things you like about the school and program and add a sentence about how you are looking forward to hearing from FSU.

You want to sound like a mature student who they would like to have. Be professional- Yes, it is hard! But that is the impression you want them to have.

Good Luck and hang in there for just a few more days!

You shouldn’t write it. Decisions are probably made already, so it is most likely a moot point. If you have a legitimate question you are trying to receive an answer to, you should email your admissions counselor and make it brief.

Greeting X,

(If you haven’t already corresponded with this person, introduce yourself [My name is X and I am applying to Florida State University for the class of 2014]). I am wondering when you guys are planning on notifying applicants regarding their admission to FSU?

Thank you,
[Your name]

But really, only send this if you cannot find this information anywhere else. It is surely posted on their website somewhere.

EDIT: If you are writing this to show interest or impact your application, follow yorkiemom’s advice. Definitely ditch what you have now; it is sending off a bad vibe.

thanks. I completely understand what you guys mean. My whole frustration and anxiety over this is making me a little delusional.
I probably sound really unstable in that haha.
I will most likely do what crazyday suggested.

FSU film school works a little differently than most, because of the limited 25 freshman slots. They interview their applicants and do not want to see a portfolio (unlike SCA).
Interviews go on for several weeks and take place on the weekends in March (this year at least.). Once decisions have been made, they are said to call you to give you a heads up that you are on their list. They want to know that you are 100% committed to going there before they send you anything official. It is a rolling admission I guess. I am still waiting for this call!!!

Thanks again!

Gugger-hang in there-no emails to them. few more days

gugger…I may just be a student too, but I think the only appropriate email message is none at all. If you want to contact them, then sent a thank you note by snail mail. Tell them what you love about them and what you love about their school. Everyone wants to know they are loved and desired, even schools. That will put your face in front of them once again. Send it tomorrow though. If by chance you did not get in and a space opens up, that might be the edge you need to tip the scales.

Bottom line is that you need to stand out, you need to be different. Kids our age hardly ever write thank you notes (which should DEFINITELY be done after every personal interview), and only think of themselves. Asking about your status is a more self-focused way to look at it. Ask about their status instead. Let them know how important that interview day was to you.

Sign off by saying, “I look forward to hearing from you.” Gugger, FSU Class of 2014 (hopefully!!).

Make them want you. Be different. Gosh…I sound like my mom hahahahha gross…lol j/k, my mom is pretty amazing.

Gugger - send me an email to fpatterson@film.fsu.edu and I’ll find out the status of your application. I’m on the road right now (working from my phone!) and will be able to check your status and return your email on Monday. (Your “email to dean” post showed up in my Google Alerts account.)

Hang in there! The fact that the faculty invited you to meet us for an interview indicates that they have a sincere interest in working with you to see if your passions and talents are a match for our program, and vice versa. I have found over the years that if our faculty are interested in you, then you are likely an attractive candidate to faculty of the other top film schools like USC and NYU.

More on Monday.

Frank Patterson, Dean
The Florida State University
College of Motion Picture Arts

^ wow! it’s crazy how many admissions people read CC.

I sincerely hope that the email from FSUFilmDean is indeed from Frank Patterson, who sounds like a very nice guy. But please note that this is the poster’s first message on cc.

lmao wow i do NOT think that is the real dean. don’t send them anything! actually there email might be real. check it with FSU’s site.

Wow, okay, after some curious Veronica Mars-ing, Frank Patterson IS in fact the Dean of FSU Film School admissions. [Frank Patterson / Administration / Faculty & Administration / Film School / FSU - College of Motion Picture Arts](Frank Patterson - College of Motion Picture Arts)

HOWEVER, is it likely that the poster really is Mr. Patterson? It is much safer to—if you choose to email him—not reference speaking to him on CC. You don’t want to be the victim of a belated April Fool’s prank. :)

If it is Mr. Patterson, it is very considerate and generous of him to post here for you, gugger.

HELLO?? did no one read/ get that FSU Dean is at FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY?? NOT USC?

@menloparkmom - HELLO?? didn’t you read/get that the user acknowledged that he’s talking about the dean of the film school of FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY?? NOT USC?

Lol really I don’t understand the confusion. :)

menlomom – Yes, we’re all talking about the FSU dean who may or may not have responded to the OP’s original post (but perhaps more in the doubting it camp.)

I’m sure that if gugger emails him the dean will respond with something about CC (if it’s true). XD

yeah i was wondering what that mom meant about USC lol i was like wait…he’s giving USC and NYU as examples…

Gugger,

Didn’t hear from you today, but want to pass on some information. The faculty will be meeting tomorrow to make final decisions about our BFA applicants, and will put together an invitation list by the end of the week. Associate Dean Reb Braddock told me that he will begin contacting applicants on Friday, and that all applicants who were interviewed will be notified by April 15.

Hope this helps!

Call Sandra or me if you need anything else.

Guggger,
This thread should be moved to the FSU Forum.

Gugger—definitely email the Dean back and reference the thread on CC. If it’s made up which I highly doubt, it will bring some attention to your application and worst case will probably bring a big laugh to the admissions office. I worked in admissions for Barnard college and students should not be afraid to email. As long as they are respectful letters and display interest and passion go for it. My daughter was admitted to 7 excellent colleges this year including USC and she emailed all of them with some letter of interest or extra something. Good luck Gugger and don’t be afraid to let someone know that you really want something. Even if they are the Dean!

What is timothy brunold’s email id at usc? is it admdir@usc.edu??
