I’ll be applying to bioengineering MS programs in the next few months and am in the process of contacting professors that I may be interested in having as a potential advisor. I was thinking of just contacting one professor of interest from each school that I’ll be applying to.

However, is it acceptable to email multiple professors of interest from the same school and research area? Does that give the connotation that “I’m not super interested in your specific lab”?

Dear OP,

I think it’s fine to email multiple profs. from the same dept. I think most people (including myself) did that.

In the email, please be sure to say that you’re “interested in their research and want to learn more about it” (whether that be via email or phone). This way, even if one finds out that you emailed another Prof from the dept. it’s clear that you are just trying to find a good fit.

Honestly, it’s perfectly ok to email different research groups. In fact, many schools have rotations for this exact purpose of finding a good fit.

Best wishes,
-DV

Great, thanks for the advice!

is emailing the best source of networking aside from conferences and college visits? Because I feel like most professors would just ‘spam’ it, or just respond with a “please refer to my website” or some BS like that.
