emergency medical technician job

I am a third year and have one more year left of school and plan to work in a lab for one more year before applying to medical school.

I want an EMT position. Not just for the resume, but it really sounds like an awesome job.

My university has an EMT program but the deadline to apply is in May and I don’t have any of the qualifications yet. By the time I do get them (in time for applying next year), I will already have graduated (and they only take full-time continuing students). So doing it at my university is not an option.

What are your suggestions about what I should do?

I remember vaguely that I probably won’t be able to get the “full” EMT certification, but should be able to get a technician position of some sort.

Its too bad you didn’t get an earlier start - UCLA EMS is a great program.

I think what you mean is that you won’t have time to get a paramedic license (which is the most advanced EMT level). You can get an EMT-Basic license rather easily.

As for what to do with it - there are plenty of private ambulance companies around Los Angeles, but all you’ll be doing are intrafacility transfers or if you do get on one of the few private companies with a 911 contract, you’ll be the driver for the fire department and not get to do anything.

So my advice would be to get a position in an ER as a tech.
