I was accepted to Emma Willard as a repeat freshman. Here is a course plan I have come up with:
9th grade:
PreCalculus- honors isn’t offered
Chemistry
English 2
Classical Mediterranean History/East Asian History
Spanish 4
Beginning Contemporary Ballet
Study hall/Color and Design
10th grade:
AP Calculus AB
AP Biology
English 3
European History/Contemporary World History
AP Spanish
Intermediate Contemporary
Intermediate Ballet
11th grade:
AP Calculus BC/MultiVariable Calculus
AP Chemistry
Gothic Literature/Short Fiction Workshop
AP United States History
Advanced Contemporary
Advanced Ballet
Fiction Writing/Study hall
12th grade:
Linear Algebra
AP Physics 1
AP Literature
AP Economics
AP Government
Emma Willard Dance Company
Year long study hall
I’d add an AP English Junior year but otherwise looks good
AP English isn’t offered for juniors. They only offer AP Literature and it’s only for seniors.
It’s fine for a first draft, but I would not spend too much time worrying about it. The advisors/counselors will go through all that with you in advance of the first day of classes. All of this is, of course predicated upon you getting placed into the initial sequence. Just because you’re currently taking Algebra 2 and Spanish 3 does not mean that EW will place you into the next level.
Any other Emma Willard students or parents that are willing to offer advice?
You will have an advisor at Emma who will help you plan this all out. You never know, you may even end up surprising yourself with some different choices along the way. I can tell you’re excited to get there… It is a great school… But I agree with @skieurope, there is no need to spend time worrying about this now. Congratulations, and take a breath… It will all fall into place when you get there, I promise!
Hi @tcuboundbaby, I am a current Emma senior. Emma does in fact have a more advanced pre-calc class, but your schedule is very unrealistic for a freshman, even as a repeat, and it is impractical to have your schedule planned out so early. After you enroll, the admissions department will work with freshmen advisors, teachers, the registar etc. to work out a perfect schedule for you. A more realistic freshmen schedule would be physics/chemistry, a math class, English 1 (it is rare for students to skip levels in English), Spanish, Classical Med + regional history class, an art class (color and design sounds good). Please also note that a lot of the classes you mentioned (APs) and Dance Company are by recommendation or invitation in the case of Dance Co. so it is not guaranteed. Also, we don’t have study hall. Hope this helps!
@tcuboundbaby Hi, I’m the Emma senior you emailed (via my mom) with this plan a few weeks ago. I sent you a pretty in-depth reply explaining the whole process; you might want to check your spam in case it slipped through the cracks!
@theoriginalclone Oh I got it. I have been really busy with life in general. Thank you for your advice.
That’s ok, just wanted to make sure it got to you; I put a lot of effort into my reply and I didn’t want it to go to waste.
Since you are clearly a smart, talented, motivated and hard-working girl - why are you entering the school as repeat freshman? I can barely understand the motivation of the repeat athletes, who want rule on the varsity field while taking it easy on the academic side. However in your case, why would you want to spend 5 years going through high school, when there is a world of interesting things to move onto.
The reason for my asking is that I’m genuinely trying the understand the thinking. Since this is an anonymous message board, figured I might even get an honest answer!
Repeats do not take it easy on the academic side; they do not repeat previous course material but are, instead, placed into courses appropriate for their level of mastery.
The world of BS does not lack for interesting things to do/see/accomplish. Oh that five years were only enough to experience it all.
@VanOsch It is harder to make friends and social connections when you come in as a new sophomore rather than a repeat freshman. I also wanted to be able to accel more in academics, which I would be enabled to do via an additional year of high school.
@ChoatieMom Thank you. Was you child a repeat?
@tcuboundbaby: No, our son entered as a 14-year-old freshman.
@ChoatieMom Ok. I wasn’t sure, as you seemed knowledgeable.
After several years on this board, and with a child who did four years at BS, I’ve learned a bit about the repeat phenomenon.
Best of luck to you.
Are repeaters usually young for the grade? Or did they attend weaker middle schools? Who decided whether a 15 year old applies for 9th or 10th?
