In the spirit of Emory’s tradition of courageous inquiry, what question do you want to help answer and why?
I want to answer a science oriented question. I am thinking about writing about helping to answer one of these questions:
What is causing bee colony collapse disorder?
What is the cure for HIV/AIDS?
Are the fundamental laws of Biology constant for the universe in the same way the laws of Chemistry and the laws of Physics are?
What causes cell apoptosis?
Why is cancer so hard to cure?
I really need help with either choosing one of the following or coming up with a better one (hopefully within the next hour).
Sorry this wasn’t with the hour, but here are my thoughts on each.
- Could be interesting
- I think it risks sounding cliched, but could also be good
- Also sounds interesting, but then there’s the issue that the laws of chem and physics aren’t necessarily constant (like the laws of physics getting messed up at a quantum level). You might be able to get away with glossing over that for an admissions supplement.
- Could work if you can avoid going technical and bringing up a bunch of molecular bio terms that aren’t easily explained.
- I would throw this one out. I feel like that questions has already been answered (it’s really easy to kill cancer cells, but since they’re similar to the rest of the host cells, it’s tough to get rid of them without wiping out all the healthy parts). The question that hasn’t been answered is how to cure it, and “I want to cure cancer” is definitely too much of a cliche.
So 1-4 all have promise if approached the right way. I feel like 1, 3, and 4 are the top 3, which still leaves the majority, but I hope that was at least somewhat helpful.
Thanks. I ended up writing about the Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
