I have been accepted to Penn State’s Smeal College of Business and Emory University, as well as a few other schools that I applied to earlier.

I am beginning to break each school apart, closely examining the pros/cons of each.

Factors:

Cost- Emory may end up being around 20k more than PSU
Prestige- Emory undergrad. bba program ranked top five in the country
Difficulty- I feel that Emory will have a much more competitive atmosphere, which can be good and bad. I want to be in an environment where the students want to learn, grow, and attain future professional development/opportunity. On the other hand, I have heard GREAT things about PSU’s Smeal College of Business.

Also, waiting on a SHC decision in Feb.

What would you do? Also, financial aid is very raw at this point as I don’t find out what I may receive for a few months from now.

It’s important to remember that Goizuetta is a competitive admit, and only accepts second semester sophomores, while Penn State’s SCB is a direct admit b-school.

Though Goizuetta accepts about 70% of all applicants, this figure is somewhat misleading since many students weed themselves out if they can’t handle the b-school prereqs. According to the admissions representative for Goizuetta, usually a 3.6 or higher college GPA is required for admission along with one or two leadership positions. Though Emory has quite a bit of grade inflation, getting a 3.6 in college can be a challenge.

If you think you can do this, great. Emory’s b-school is excellent and very well respected in the Atlanta area, the fastest growing metropolitan area in the US. If not, you’d be better off going to Penn State (assuming you get into SCB) if you’re absolutely sure you want to major in business.

If Emory is $20,000 more a year, and you’d have to take on that debt or cause your parents significant hardship, it’s not worth it. Go to Penn State.

I have yet to see evidence that suggests Emory is a better feeder school to banking/finance than Penn State. I think neither school is considered a target for such career, though a couple or so grads of each school may be able to break it every year. I guess this all boils down to grades, attitude and other achievements whilst at undergrad years. I suggest you go where you’ll have to pay substantially less and where you think you’ll be happier.

RML is wrong. Emory is at least recruited by a number of bulge bracket investment banks and some of the larger consulting firms whereas Penn State is nowhere to be found.

You won’t find similar school-specific pages for Penn State since its not recruited at all by consulting firms besides maybe Accenture in their technology division.

Emory’s B-School is far superior to Penn State and if finances were within 20K overall for both places, then definitely go to Emory.

Thank you for the responses. As of now, it is looking like 20k PER year more for Emory, but the gap may decrease.

I am looking to get into I-banking or Finance related fields. As @whenwhen mentioned, the b-school at Emory is not a guarantee which makes me hesitant.
