Hi, I am a student from a Top 50 Catholic High School in Miami, Florida. I am in the Honors program at my school. I take College Prep, Dual Enrollment, AP, and Honors Classes. I am the president & founder of the Stock Market Club in conjunction with Florida International University’s College of Business. Outside of school I volunteer for the League Against Cancer. I am also a writer for my school newspaper. This summer I was accepted into the University of Florida’s Summer Journalism Institute at their College of Journalism & Communications. I have a 4.0 weighted GPA. 25 ACT Composite Score. 1760 SAT, 540 Reading, 570 Math, 650 Writing. I am going to begin taking prep classes with a well known company that should raise my SAT up 320 points & 5 ACT points. I was recently nominated for the Silver Knight Award.

I am a Hispanic male. (Cuban-American)

Going into my senior year now I have come down to my top 2 schools:
University of Florida & Oxford College at Emory University

Florida being a public school is much more affordable for my family. My family makes over $100,000. They tell me we aren’t poor enough for assistance but we aren’t rich enough to cover the tuition. Money aside, I know that Emory is a much better school but I don’t know of any scholarship or financial assistance that they offer. Is there any chance that Emory might offer me financial assistance? I was wondering if anyone out there could tell me more about Oxford at Emory so that my dream may actually become a reality?

You can get a ton of information from the Oxford College website at Emory.edu and by searching these boards. I’m sure most everyone on here would love to help you out, but it’s really difficult without knowing what, exactly, you want to know more about.

Information on scholarship and financial aid is available in the admissions section of the Oxford website, though merit money is difficult to win and tends to go to students with the highest scores/GPAs and an exemplary resume.

For need based aid, it depends on how much over $100K you family makes. If it’s just a bit over $100K they might still give about $10 to 15k in grants + FWS + Stafford loans. If its closer to $200k or more you’re probably just gonna get the regular $5500 unsubsidized Stafford loan that everyone is eligible for.

I go to the main campus, but from what I’ve heard from others about the admission process it’s about competitive as a standard flagship state school. You seem to be match for getting into Oxford at this point given you URM status, but if you can pull up those test scores, show interest in the school (trust me, this is very important), and apply ED then you’ve almost guaranteed in.
