Current emory students: I would like to know EVERYTHING you know about theology at emory.

lol thats pretty broad lol…

ps not a current emory student

Emory’s theology seems awesome to me. You can study with Tibetan monks and other members of the Tibetan Community (which is heavily steeped in religion). Tibetan Biddhism is fascinating. The Tibetan partnership with Emory is my reason for applying. I love world religions in general though, and I’m sure that Emory’s department is strong in every way.

I just know that I have taken 2-3 classes in the religion dept. and they were amazing. Take Bobbi Patterson (had Religion 100, and even that was good) if you can. Dr. Dianne Diakite is also really good and dedicated. These people are great teachers and researchers in their field (most of them do field research on the cultures/religions they study). After witnessing the religion dept, I can see how the Theology School is so strong. And some of the topic matters are just very interesting and satisfying to one’s intellectual curiousity. I took Diakite for Religion 326: African Diasporah Religion. And what was cool is that we would read scholarly books on religious culture and phenomenon and could render and put forth our own opinion. We were not preached to. We could propose an idea to her, and she could render an opinion based on her own experience and the time she spent with members of a certain culture and would even play an interview she had with say a member extensively covered in one of the books we would read. Her teaching and input was really insightful (Even though that semester was stressful for me, I looked forward to that class). And even our writing assignments, she and her TAs would put lots of time into us improving our writing and getting it right.

In general, this is what I hear about a lot of people in the religion dept. So I’m gonna guess that it’s pretty darned good. I actually considered minoring.
