Which one would people say is better, if money is not an issue?
Emory, I don’t think UF does anything better than Emory. Although, what do you want to study?
Based on indications of the academic preparation of their incoming students, these schools keep different company.
https://amp.businessinsider.com/the-610-smartest-colleges-in-america-2015-9
These are two very different schools, an elite private with $53K a year tuition vs a LARGE comprehensive public university that charges in-state kids $6.3K a year. That’s going to lead to much smaller classes, better student to faculty ratio’s, etc, at Emory vs UF. If $ isn’t an issue, and it offers the right programs, that’s makes a strong case for Emory.
The “experience” will also be very different. It’s a medium size private college in an urban setting (Atlanta) vs a large public university in a college town (Gainesville).
UF offers far more programs than Emory. For a lot of kids, Emory isn’t even an option as it doesn’t offer their major. For several other majors, like Finance, Accounting, Nursing, it’s going to be hard to make the case that Emory is that much better based on outcomes (other than the reason’s listed above).
@Gator88NE
I dont think that was a great example, Finance, Accounting, and Nursing are Emory’s best majors besides health.
Its hard to beat Emory, for attention, smaller class sizes, nicer location in the heart of Atlanta next to GaTech and Ga State U. Gainesville has school spirit and amazing football though (GO Gators !) though. Its expensive to fly to Gainesville if you are out of state. Easy to fly to Atlanta from anywhere. Gainesville student body is mostly Florida students. Emory has a student body from all 50 states and international students. I have not looked but would guess housing is a scramble at a big state school like UF, and Emory probably offers 4 years of housing. @emorynavy would know about housing I bet.
With respect to specific academic strengths, Emory has been well-recognized for its creative writing program: https://contently.net/2014/11/06/resources/tools/training/10-best-colleges-creative-writers/.
@emorynavy Lol…I picked those three majors because they were some of Emory’s best majors, but one’s UF can match. No point to listing any major associated with UF College of Engineering, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, College of Journalism, College of Education, etc.
All three UF programs are very selective, rigorous and well recruited. All three match up well to Emory’s programs. You don’t pick Emory because it is “better” in one of these three majors (as measured by rigor/salary/job placement), but for the other reasons we’ve been listing (smaller classes, more attention, Atlanta vs Gainesville…etc).
@Coloradomama : Do you really consider Emory’s location in suburban Decatur, Georgia to be “in the heart of Atlanta next to Ga Tech and Ga State U” ?
Totally different schools, totally different experiences. The one thing that we know for sure, however, is which school has the better football team.
@Gator88NE
Not to be rude but to say UF has the same placement potential as Emory, especially in something like finance, seems contentious to me.
@Publisher
Emory is 10 min drive from midtown and is not Decatur anymore.
@Coloradomama Emory only guarantees housing for the first 2 years. They have housing for upperclassmen but it’s not guaranteed.
@emorynavy: What is the significance of midtown being a 10 minute drive from Emory ? Thought we were talking about downtown Atlanta.
@Publisher
Georgia Tech isn’t in downtown either, its in midtown.
Georgia State is in downtown. GSU, Ga. Tech & Emory are not next to one another. Especially considering Atlanta’s traffic. Relevant to this thread because one poster is trying to portray the three universities as one big campus akin to UF–and that is not the case.
UF doesn’t guarantee housing for anyone.
Apparently, Emory University became part of Atlanta in 2018. So no longer uses a Decatur address.
Drive time from Emory to Georgia Tech is almost 30 minutes in busy traffic, 16 minutes in light traffic.
GA Tech is in midtown on one side. Its location is in walking distance from several downtown hotels.
Returning to the thread topic of UF or Emory, it depends upon what OP is seeking in university experience. The difference between the two is quite dramatic. Totally different environments & totally different experiences.
No one would drive between GATech and Emory. You can take the the Shuttle bus, see this schedule.
https://pts.gatech.edu/other-shuttles
. GaTech students in BME work at Emory all the time. No one drives there. I have traveled to this campus many times, and walked between all three schools, no 30 minute driving, no one uses cars, unless you are going to Chattanooga to rock climb or to fish north of Atlanta, which is amazing fishing, or to go hiking at all the hiking
trails around Atlanta. Lots of very close in hiking as Atlanta is at the very edge of the Appalachian trail.
GaState is a very large school that is right next to GaTech, and the 1996 Olympic housing is the dorms for GaState.
The 1996 Olympic pool, is the pool for GaTech.
The pool and Rec center at GaTech is truly very good.
There is no interaction between GaState, and GaTech. But lots of interaction between Emory medical and
GaTech. This is why GaTech has a very top rank in BME, because of the Emory program. Also GaTech students
are accepted at a high rate into Emory Med school, because of the relationship.
This explains the research relationship between Emory U and GaTech.
https://bme.gatech.edu
Emory and GaTech are 4.6 miles apart from center to center but shuttle bus is about 16 minute ride.
Just for completeness, Ga State does have a pathways program to transfer to GaTech.
And GaState has SEVEN campuses in Atlanta, one is very close to GaTech, just a mile away.
There is not particularly a lot of interaction between the two, besides that they both benefited
from the 1996 Olympic pools and dorms.
