I am applying to Pitt and on the Math and Critical Reading sections I fall in the middle 50% of the admitted class. However, on the Writing section I fall 20 points below the middle 50% range. I was wondering how much emphasis Pitt places on the writing section, if at all, or do they only look at the combined math and critical reading scores?

Most of us can only speculate on how, or even if, Pitt uses the SAT writing score. So unless someone identifies himself/herself as a member of the admissions committee, I wouldn’t rely too much on the responses you may get here. I think you should contact Pitt directly; this seems like a reasonable question to ask. For what it’s worth, I looked Pitt up on College Board, but they don’t say anything about the writing section score, only that the SAT essay is not going to be used.

Everything I’ve heard is that they have only used CR+M in the past. That, of course, is subject to change, and who knows if it is used for borderline cases or borderline merit awards. I would very much expect you are fine, but as mentioned above, it never hurts to call and ask, just to make sure.

Pitt does say that they do not count the writing section. It seems though that the competition increases each year. Why not take the SAT again to try to bring it up. There is time. Also consider the ACT. Also apply early to increase your chances.
