Employer signing her name on my work?

I get that I’m the one working for her. But is it only me who thinks it’s unfair for an employer to get you to write something and then sign her name on it? I know there are typist initials…but she doesn’t even let me put those.

I assume that whatever you prepared is going out to clients. The simple fact is that when a client reads something, they want to know ‘who’ said so. So, when your boss signs something she is putting her imprimatur on it and stands behind it. If there’s a mistake, insofar as the client is concerned, it’s her mistake, not yours. (Believe me – she can’t say, my intern screwed up and I just signed it).

Similarly, the signature tells the client who to call for follow up, business, etc.

So, ultimately, it comes down to who bears responsibility for the work product. You are responsible to your boss, and your boss is responsible to the client.

Is this completely fair. Maybe not, but it’s a fact of life. If you remain with this employer, you may want to approach your boss as to how you can get face time, and develop as a contact point for clients (in which case, your name will start going on things). If you reach a stage where this is appropriate, and your boss doesn’t to this, it’s time to consider your career path at this employer.

Thank you, that makes complete sense.
