Don’t know if I’ll have any bites here, but-- have any other parents here on CC ever worked for the census bureau?
Curious about travel distance and time required. The radio spot I heard this morning seemed targeted to recent retirees, but thought it might also be an option for parents of school-age kids.

No idea, never done it. Step 1 is to schedule and take a test. I just scheduled mine (Feb 2).

Me too (10 char)–

Interesting! Did they say how much the pay is?

I’m in NY–
supposedly 16-18/hour, plus mileage. Not bad.

I just set up an interview.

Nice job for ‘stay at home mom supplement,’ but I actually need a real job! However, best to keep all options open–& you are right, lspf72, 16/18 is not bad for this work!

Although I’m a little nervous knocking on doors. I’m not going into anyone’s house, definitely! :-)

Have been trying to get through by phone all afternoon. Constant busy signal. Frustrating.

Just thought about this. I would be nervous about knocking on doors of strangers, and being confronted by large watch dogs!

We have some areas around here where I would not want to go door-to-door, but most would be OK. The traffic and travel time would be more frequent issues here. I guess it depends on where you’re assigned.

The hours sound flexible, though, which would be a huge plus.
Wish I had scheduled my exam last week, when I was still able to get through by phone. They ran a couple spots on the radio today, and I think a LOT of people are interested. Am also worried about the math on the exam… am good at using a calculator, though.

Good luck, lspf72.

northeastmom–I’m less concerned about the dogs than the folks in the homes! I guess if you are on the front step you are okay…

They are actually hiring office clerks and supervisors as well, and the employment may last 6 mos to 2 years depending on the position

do they allow calculators on the test?
