Emt

Does Rice offer EMT-Basic positions to students? If so, how competitive is it? Also, do EMT’s get free room and board?

Short answer: Yes. Very competitive. No.

Long answer: Rice has a completely student-run EMS, which is a great asset because students have no reason to be afraid of getting in trouble for calling EMS if something is wrong. Students can take the EMT-Basic course their sophomore year, and start working on EMS second semester sophomore year, if they log enough ambulance hours. I’m pretty sure EMTs get paid, but I’m not sure how much.

i am a rising senior in high school and i am already an emt. does that give me an advantage over others who are getting certified much later in college?

I’m not sure that it would give you an advantage, but that should mean that you don’t have to go through Rice’s EMT-Basic course–you might be able to get involved earlier. It’s competitive to get in the course, but pretty much everyone who takes the course becomes an EMT.

Also, I misspoke (wrote?) in my previous post. I meant to say freshman year, not sophomore year. I have friends who took the EMT course second semester and were on EMS by the last few weeks of school.

I was too busy in the spring semester to do EMT, so I’m currently finishing up my summer EMT Basic and I do believe they accept any registered EMT’s. The course in the spring semester is only 25 spots I believe.
