Ended up at Bowles

Just a little mad that I ended up at Bowles when the co-ed experience was one of the things I was looking forward to in college.

With that being said, people who have been through Bowles: how was your experience as a freshman there like?

Hello! I won’t be going to Bowles, but I’ll be nearby at Stern Hall. Actually, I was fearing the co-ed experience, so I was quite relieved when I got this.

Hi! Yeah, but new experiences are what college life is about right? Just my luck to not get any of my four choices haha

I was in Bowles last year, and it wasn’t any of my choices either. That said, it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. If you’re lucky, you’ll bond with your roommates and floormates, forming some of the greatest friendships you’ll ever have. Spend time in the Bowles library, at the dining commons, over at Stern or foothill, and you’ll have no trouble finding friends and people of the opposite sex. It’s not hard to meet girls, in classes or otherwise, you just have to put yourself out there.

Sounds reassuring, thank you!

Hopefully you aren’t engineering as well.

Engineering + Bowles … that would be terrifying…

Honestly, I think the general consensus is that Bowles is indeed pretty awful.

And by pretty awful, I mean really awful. Try to transfer and see what happens!

My current roommate lived there and hated it. Of all the several guys I know who lived there, they all disliked it. And not necessarily because of the all-guys deal (but that was definitely a big part of it), but mostly because the interior is pretty moldy and rundown. I have a friend who was able to move out because he was having allergy problems that he claims were caused by the building!

Not saying you can’t have good experiences there, but Bowles is definitely not what it used to be. Stern doesn’t have nearly as bad a reputation as Bowles, primarily because it’s a nice building and it’s not freshmen-only (that’s what murdered Bowles).

well I applied for a transfer the second I found out I got bowles so fingers crossed…

@blahblah nope thankfully not engineering  (humanities)

Hey, how did you find out about which hall you would be staying in?

@silentbullet: where do you go to apply for a transfer in dorms?

jrockrocks: They email housing offers… alternatively you can check on the housing portal/app site.

Okay that’s good, do you know when this occurs?

jrockrocks: Well, in theory it’s already happened, seeing as others have been posting about housing assignments (and clearly had bad lottery numbers). I don’t know an exact date, continuing students have known their housing for quite a while. As I said, either log in to the housing app (sign in, click school year, if you don’t see an offer click to the last tab) or check your emails (the one you gave housing, and your berkeley.edu email).

why bowles is not good for engineering majors.i am an eecs student who ende up at bowles

@berkeleypride i emailed the housing department directly with a reason explaining my transfer, and i got a reply saying i have been placed in the transfer request list

silentbullet?

Can my reason be that I simply would prefer a double and don’t think I’d be able to bear a triple?
Or does it have to be something more substantial?

And what’s the email address?

collstu: I think the “bad for engineering” is more a joke, as engineering/EECS classes tend to be 80-90% male, and Bowles is all guys. So, engineering + Bowles = not a lot of girls. :P

berkeleybrah: If that’s you’re reason, that’s what you should email them. If there’s other factors, bring those up too… but the only real issue seems to be preferring a double to a triple.
